This is blazing Clifford Brown caught live in Los Angeles in April and August, 1954.
Don't know about the CD sound on the transfer, but the original vinyl was fine (bought it 3 times.) The Quintet is simply marvelous with Harold Land, Richie Powell, George Morrow and Max Roach.
Side 2 features Teddy Edwards, Carl Perkins,George Bledsoe and Max Roach. "Tenderly" and "Clifford's Axe" are all Clifford in a Quartet. Every cut is a standout and essential listening.

This was my introduction to the genius trumpeter at the tender age of 12. It was an instant love and the flame still burns today. He was possibly the most lyrical and emotional trumpeter ever. Just an incredible player, and from what I've read, a wonderful human being. I was so moved by this man, that years later I would compose a song in his honor called "CLIFFORD'S CHANT" along with my co-writer, Mr. Jim Miller. I hope and pray the world hears it someday, and gives Clifford more recognition with a whole new audience.

I actually own the LP of this album printed - I believe - in the 70s, so I can say with some certainty that the original is not quite brilliant when it comes to the recording technology.
However, the music is brilliant, with Clifford Brown playing beautifully, both in warm ballads and hot uptempo...

This music, while performed at virtuoso level also sounds as it might be quite accessible to the jazz beginners...
The rest of the Max Roach All Stars is really fine (Richie Powell-p, George Morrow - b, Harold Land-ts) with plenty opportunity to strut their stuff...

I can't agree with other reviewers regarding the sound on this CD. For the most part, the sound is pretty dismal. There is terrible distortion on the master tape of "I can't get started," and Max Roach's drums are over-recorded throughout. Also the sound appears muffled - the whole thing is just poorly recorded. Nothing could hold Brownie down, of course, and his ringing trumpet comes through blazingly on Cole Porter's "I get a kick out of you." "Jordu" is done nicely as well. But all in all, not the best Clifford Brown on the market.

I just cant say enough about the sound and feeling that comes out of cliffords horn... he gives you the impression that at that particular moment in his life is the last, and he shares all his emotion and love of life and people to you, the listener... clifford is and always will be my favorite musician and my mentor... even with him gone he has tought me so much
thanks clifford(brownie) Mark
