3.0 out of 5 stars Good but Has Flaws, July 18, 2007

Don't listen to the other reviewer who gave this book 5 stars.

For those who are not too familiar with rock piano may not find all that they're looking for here. The material is good with a harmonic analysis of 12 of the most influential rock pieces but it does not put a lot into showing you how to incorporate the rock licks but for those who can read music well, you can use some of the material and put it into your own playing but the book should have had sections organized into different aspects of playing rock. The book should have also given the student practice suggestions and just more tips period.

There is a book that's right now discontinued titled "Improvising Rock Piano" by Jeffrey Gutcheon that you can find on Amazon. Also you can type "rock piano" in the DVD search for some good videos on rock piano.

Lastly, rock piano is a combination of the blues and boogie woogie basslines so I would study the blues a lot because a lot of rock solos are built from elements of the blues. There are good books such as "Improvising Blues Piano" by Tim Richards and "100 Ultimate Blues Riffs for Piano/Keyboards" by Andres D. Gordon both of which can be found here on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars A phenomenal text with CD, July 24, 2008

As all of David Cohen's publications, this is well thought-out and a terrific help for anyone wishing to understand big time rock and roll piano licks. He breaks down the most famous of the licks and then the CD plays them first full speed and then slow speed. It is up to the learner to incorporate these licks into his or her own arrangements. That is easily done. The Gutcheon book is also very good -- but it never came with a CD. It is also more of a style manual than a handy reference of the most famous rock piano licks. These two books serve different purposes.
