This review is from: The Best of Roy of the Rovers: 1980's (Paperback)
The David Beckham of the footballing comic book world enters the fourth decade of his playing career looking nothing like the fifty-something he should resemble. Moving with the times as the publisher fought a slowly declining readership as the age of online entertainment loomed like a giant technological shadow, the eighties saw Roy facing ever more intruiging off-field challenges to flesh out his on-field adventures. Marriage problems, fatherhood, attempts on his life, battles with errant supporters, disobedient players and recalcitrant relatives add to drama, and Rovers even suffer a dreaded relegation from the old English First Divsion.

One can only imagine how Roy would have responded to the 21 century (sans foot) had he lived long enough to see it. would he still be turning out for Melchester, covered in tribal tattoos, battling to hold down a first team spot as a 75 year old against, his son, grandson and great-grandson? We can but dream.

I really enjoyed this comic strip nostalgia trip, and I recommend all the Roy of the Rovers collections to other sad old footballing nerds like me.
