The Best of the SACD, DVD, DTS, DSD, Multi-Channel Releases!

Martin A Hogan "Marty From SF"
The list author says: "Who needs another introduction? I'm just a hard-core audiophile that finally has my 'almost' perfect surround sound system after many years. (It's a Denon receiver/Speaker System with a Sony SACD Player/Decoder).

What do these acronyms mean?*

*SACD - Super Audio Compact Disc. Clear, crisp remastered sound in
either stereo or multi-channel. You need an SACD Decoder Player.
*Hybrid/SACD - Has a layer for regular CD and another for SACD playback in any CD player. Can be played in any CD player, but you only hear the regular CD mix.
*DVD - Digital Virtual Disc. Stereo, but more commonly Multi-Channel. You need a DVD Decoder Player.
*DTS - Digital Theater Surround. Used most commonly for films, but also multi-channel music. This plays in any DVD player (like for films).
*DSD - Direct Stream Digital. Is the trademark name used by Sony and Philips for their system of recreating audible frequencies which uses pulse-density modulation encoding, a technology to store audio signals for SACD.
*Multi-Channel - More than two channels; more than stereo.
*DUALDISC - An interesting, but doomed format where one side is the
CD version and the other is a 5.1 Multi-Channel mix with
videos and other features. Great sound, but too thick
for car stereos. Will play in any CD player except most car players.

NOTE: Without a "DECODER" for a specific FORMAT, you will only hear regular stereo in a typical CD player.

I hope this was helpful! Please Rate YES if helpful! If I just confused you - sorry!"

Days of Future Passed (Deluxe Edition)
Days of Future Passed (Deluxe Edition)
"A classic several times over, the SACD HYBRID version sounds different than the DTS version, but both are great.  Note that the bass has been mixed down unfortunately.  I like both versions."
Bee Gees - One Night Only / The Official Story

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)

Singles 1969-1981
"Before you roll your eyes, some of these songs are real masterpieces of pop.  The original recordings were amazing in themselves.  Now in HYBRID SACD, you don't just hear Karen Carpenter inhale and breathe before she sings - you can hear her initially part her lips!"
Every Good Boy Deserves Favour
Every Good Boy Deserves Favour
"One of the original "Seven" Moody Blues albums, the song, "Procession" takes full advantage of surround sound, emulating the progression of musical styles since the begining of man to the present. It is amazing!""
The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars
The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars

Tapestry (Multichannel/Stereo)
Tapestry (Multichannel/Stereo)
"The classic album that has more artists cover her songs than most.  Sounds incredible in SACD multi-channel format.  Read the reviews to see which issues are stereo and which are multi-channel."
Say You Will (DVD Audio)
Say You Will (DVD Audio)
"DVD Audio is arguably almost as good as SACD and this album proves it.  Remixed to improve on the original masters, you hear things you never thought were there."
Madman Across The Water
Madman Across The Water
""Levon" and "Tiny Dancer" are the highlights, but ANY of Elton John's HYBRID SACD albums rock!  Check out "Tumbleweed Connection" through "Peachtree Road"."
In Search of the Lost Chord (Deluxe Edition)
In Search of the Lost Chord (Deluxe Edition)
""Departure", "Ride My See-Saw" and "Legend Of A Mind" along with the other classics really make the original recording sound like tape hiss.  Great remix, but unfortunately the second disc with extras is only in stereo."
Love (CD + Audio DVD)

Lizard (CD + DVD Audio)
"This album was not critically or commercially popular, but the 5.1 surround brings out the hidden instruments and altered vocals with amazing effects!"
Heathen
Heathen
"The SACD version of this is clearly multi-channel and will blow you away.  Strong, distinct bass, guitars, keyboards, special effects and vocals with Bowie songwriting make this SACD a knock-out!  Note:  This version shown is NOT the SACD - you'll have to hunt it down here on Amazon.com."
On The Threshold Of A Dream [SACD]
On The Threshold Of A Dream [SACD]
"One of their best psychedelic albums; it sounds really, really bizarrely wonderful in this format.  It's like tripping without the LSD!  Unfortunately, the nine extra songs are only in stereo, but it still sounds great!"
461 Ocean Boulevard
461 Ocean Boulevard
"Clapton's so-called 'come-back' album has all the fantastic blues that he is famous for, plus some surprises!  Now in DTS format (note that this disc says High Definition - it's the same thing), you can hear every guitar, every instrument and every provocative word that Yvonne Elliman is singing!"
Seal IV
Seal IV
"R & B at it's best!  Seal sounds fantastic - listen to "Love's Divine" and try NOT to be moved!  This multi-channel DVD-Audio is tough to find."
David Live
David Live
"Bowie's live albums are not always perfect, but in DTS, he brings out the energy he shows on stage - and I was at this concert!  Check out "Stage", as well!"
Symphonies No.4 & 5
Symphonies No.4 & 5
"I am no rock 'n roll snob.  These two symphonies in multi-channel SACD is like being in the concert hall.  Crisp, slean and dynamic, the experience is purely emotional."
David Bowie - A Reality Tour
David Bowie - A Reality Tour
"Forget about the fancy camera angles.  Bowie and his band really deliver in the 'round with this inexpensive DVD.  Listen to Gail the bass player during "Under Pressure".  Amazing!  Also, check out "Reality" as a a HYBRID/SACD or as a DUALDISC (lots of extra video features) all in 5.1 surround!"
A Night At The Opera
A Night At The Opera
"Actually, I am referring to the DVD-AUDIO version of this album.  How many times can you hear Freddy scream, "Bohemian Rhapsody" from seven different speakers?  Remarkable!!!  Hunt this down...it is what Surround Sound for Rock is all about!  The band was said to be THRILLED when they heard the final mix result."
Collection

"If you're a John Denver fan, you'll really enjoy this studio recording done in 5.1 surround sound.  The songs are updated, but the sound is impeccable.  A hard to find Hybrid SACD."
Frampton Comes Alive! (25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)
Frampton Comes Alive! (25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)
"This 'particular' double CD is NOT an SACD or DVD.  You'll have to hunt for those on Amazon.com.  For some reason, I cannot edit them into this list.  For the version that is multi-channel, you need the DVD."
Running on Empty (CD & DVD Audio)
Running on Empty (CD & DVD Audio)
"For a 'live' concert, this really sounds like a studio recording with crystal clear audience participation.  Too bad it wasn't a complete continual concert intead of twelve seprate live songs, but the sound is immpecable."
Captain Fantastic
Captain Fantastic
"This precursor to the recent "Captain & The Kid" is a multi-channel wonder.  Not only are the original ten songs remastered and remixed, but there are three more otherwise unavailable (in this format) songs added on.  I can't wait for "Captain & The Kid" to be remixed in SACD multi-channel!"
Young Americans
Young Americans
"This double disc set is remarkable in that, Bowie recorded ALL vocals and instruments in one take.  He then took the backing vocals and placed them in the rear, pronounced his vocals to center front and changed some of the mixes completely!  Check out "Fame" in particular!"
In the Wake of Poseidon
In the Wake of Poseidon
"A real mix of acoustics and ultra-overbearing mellotron that is fantastic!  In surround (5.1) you hear what Robert Fripp always wanted you to hear.  "The Devils Triangle" is amazing."
Hot Rocks 1964-1971
Hot Rocks 1964-1971
"The best of the Rolling Stones remastered in DSD (similiar to HYBRID SACD), the bad boys sound even better in your living room.  Check out all their earlier releases in this format, including, "Let It Bleed".  Note that DSD is NOT surround sound, unless stated on box."
Layla
Layla
"The Clapton/Allman/Gordon Rock 'n Blues in Surround Sound!?  Fantastic!  "Layla" and "Bell Bottom Blues" never looked or sounded so good!  Its not the best separation in sound, but it's better than stereo!"
