Book Description

September 14, 1998 Best Law Schools (Princeton Review)
THE LARGEST ANNUAL STUDENT SURVEY

If you want to know what life is really like at the country's leading law schools, then listen to the students who attend them. This book contains the results of the largest annual law student survey. More than 11,000 students told us what they think, and we've included their comments here in the most comprehensive and definitive guide ever produced.

ALL THE INFORMATION YOU NEED TO MAKE A CRUCIAL DECISION

The school you choose determines how you'll spend the next three years of your life and greatly influences how well you will do in the job market when you graduate. The updated 1999 Edition of The Best Law Schools advises you of the attributes and possible drawbacks of the complete list of U.S. ABA accredited schools and 18 California Bar Association (CBA) accredited schools; it also provides all the practical information you need to apply:

How effective is the school's faculty?
What is the student/faculty ratio?
What are the average GPA and LSAT scores for who are accepted?
What is the job placement rate for graduates?
How much financial aid is available?
What is the bar passage rate for each school?
Plus: campus and e-mail addresses, telephone numbers, admissions deadlines, tuition, and more

EXCLUSIVE RANKINGS IN THIRTEEN CATEGORIES

We rank the top (and bottom) schools in thirteen categories including competitiveness, quality of life, teaching faculty, minority representation, and job placement.

MORE THAN JUST FACT AND FIGURES

The Best Law Schools is an all-inclusive review of legal education. The book explores recent trends in admissions, tells you what to expect from law school curriculum, prepares you for the LSAT, and helps you plan your application strategy, from writing your personal statement to registering for the LSDAS (Law School Data Assembly Service).

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

So you want to go to law school. Concerned about the LSAT? How to pay for tuition? Where you'll end up spending those three long years? The test-prep coaches at the Princeton Review have seen it all and lay out the answers to your every question in The Best Law Schools 1999 Edition. Chapters on Admissions, Women in Law School, Money Matters, and (of course) Law School Profiles compose a well-organized guide to the often hairy process of choosing and gaining admittance to the right school for you.

All 175 ABA-approved (and 19 CBA-approved) schools are listed alphabetically, with easily accessible information on students, admissions, costs, and student survey results. Schools are also listed regionally and ranked according to such criteria as quality of life, minority representation among students and faculty, and placement within different fields. There is also plenty of food for thought about nontraditional legal education and careers for those mavericks who want to go their own way. If you dream of being a lawyer, this is the book for you. --Rob Lightner

5.0 out of 5 stars The only outside source I needed!, December 15, 2000
This review is from: The Best Law Schools, 1999 Edition (Best Law Schools (Princeton Review)) (Paperback)
I am currently in my second semester in law school. This book was the only resource that I used when contacting schools for information and narrowing my choices. It had all of the information that I needed to get in touch with the schools. I was very concerned with the practical lawyering skills at each school and this was the ONLY source that had statistics on lawyering skills for each school. This book was RIGHT ON for the school that I am now attending.

3.0 out of 5 stars A fairly interesting guide to most of the law schools in the, August 9, 1999

country. I'm not sure how often the passages on each schools are updated but I bought the 1999 edition and found it to be a refreshging departure from the usual bland statistics that are quoted in other books. It is nice to hear from students even though I do agree that the authors try to make every law school appealing. I also found the admissions section to be annoying because the authors seem to suggest that every law school is difficult to gain admission too. In conclusion, I certainly wouldn't use this book as my sole guide to law schools but I think that it is a nice compliment to the ABA book.

3.0 out of 5 stars For attempting to achieve the impossible, it's not bad., April 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Best Law Schools, 1999 Edition (Best Law Schools (Princeton Review)) (Paperback)
Lets set something straight. You can't rank the intangible; you can't rank law schools. But considering the huge controversy over whether law schools can or should be ranked, the guide is worthy of consideration simply because of its bold attempt to do so. Each law school is portrayed in a pleasant light, and the guide bases much of its analyses on direct quotes from the students. Gone from the 1999 edition is the Gourman Report Rating, which helps eliminate the temptation of ranking law schools arbitrarily. The guide also reads easily and contains subtle humor, making for an enjoyable reading experience. Its dry remarks about the admissions process at Stanford are particularly memorable. But the excitement ends there. You will quickly find that the guide changes little from year to year. Thus, one guide should last you for awhile. What is also lacking is an honest, direct criticism of each school's law program. Perhaps this cannot be done, given the limited amount of information with which the authors must work. This again points to the fact that it's impossible to truly measure a law school without having been there - and even then, how can you compare such an experience with another law school?

So take it for what it's worth. Viewed together with other law school materials, "The Best Law Schools" should strike you as one of the more entertaining guides.
