5.0 out of 5 stars The Woodstock Sha Na Na
This collection is the best available on the market for Sha Na Na from pre-1972 thru 1974. The songs are taken from early LP's "Rock & Roll Is Here To Stay", "The Night Is Still Young", "The Golden Age Of Rock 'N' Roll", "Hot Sox" and "From The Streets". Part of the group's charm is being live and sloppy as seen in the Woodstock movie. The studio versions are more clean...

3.0 out of 5 stars Sha Na Na rocks but this album isn't their best
This album wasn't even relesed by the band, just put out by previous record labels. If you want some real, studio recorded, Sha Na Na, check out their Rock and roll dance party, and of course the Grease soundtrack. Their website (shanana dot com) has a list of their tour dates, which trust me (i saw them last week in danville, ca) still rocks.

3.0 out of 5 stars No Substitute For the Real Thing, August 17, 2002
This review is from: The Best of Sha Na Na: Grease for Peace (Audio CD)
I saw these guys in concert back in the early Seventies when I was in college. They put on a heckuva show and provide more than competent covers of classic Fifties material. I even bought a few of their albums before I started buying the originals. Sha Na Na were always more enjoyable in concert than on record. Don't get me wrong. These guys aren't hacks, but they bring nothing new to these songs. My advice--stick with the original artists. But catch them live if you get the chance.

Also not impressed with the recording quality of this album, even with the bass turned on full!

Part of the group's charm is being live and sloppy as seen in the Woodstock movie. The studio versions are more clean in the "Grease" soundtrack, but then why not buy the original recordings and artists? Sha Na Na is: Bowzer, Dirty Dan, Johnny, Screamin' Scott, Chico, Denny, Donny, Lennie, Jocko and Tony. The later CD's and ever changing line-ups carry on what these guys started with good quality releases. Sha Na Na did not start on TV, "Grease" or revival festivals. It began at Woodstock! Yes eight of the eighteen songs are live. Guess what folks? That's what they are known for! Sha Na Na on CD begins here.

I do not want to be redundant. Read the other reviews given they are well done...these guys have talent and have always been able to walk the fine line between serious rock performer and a send up of the rock stars of the 50's and 60's. That is their genius. Unfortunately, it gets lost on this CD which has mediocre sound quality and incorrect tempo for some of the songs. Buy Sha Na Na CDs, just not this one!
