I WONDERED when this was coming,
By
This review is from: Best of Silk (Audio CD)
When news arrived a year or so ago that Lil' G was leaving Silk, a lot of people then decided that the group was pretty much done. This notion was further confirmed with the horrendous follow-up album Silktime, but now Elektra presents a "best of" album for them. The beginning of this collection takes you back to 1992, as the group's first two songs, "Happy Days" and "Freak Me", hit the speakers. And don't worry; the remix of the latter shows up toward the end of the album. Other favorites can be found on here, like "If You", "Girl U For Me" and "Lose Control". There are also several offering from their underrated 1996 self-titled album, like "Don't Rush", "Hooked On You", and "I Can Go Deep". There is only a single song from Love Session, "We're Callin' You", which is okay (a little too long, though), and there are no songs from Silktime (but hey, this isn't called the WORST of Silk). And the very last song is especially rewarding because it features the 12" remix of "Happy Days", which is very hard to find anywhere. This is a good compilation to pick up for any Silk fan, past or present, or even for any contemporary R&B fan. The title says it best: this IS the best of Silk. Anthony Rupert

Happy Days are here again with the release of a greatest hits album by 90's mega group Silk. If you were a true R&B fan in the 90s then you were a fan of Silk's music. They had countless hits in their collection, and The Best of Silk highlights practically all of them. If you include the opening interlude, there are SIX tracks from their first album Lose Control on this greatest hits disc. They are the opening "Interlude," "Happy Days," "Freak Me," "Lose Control," "Girl U For Me," and "It Had To Be You." They also include two remixes of "Happy Days" and "Freak Me" at the end of the disc. Songs from their self-titled second album include "I Can Go Deep" (which was also from A Low Down Dirty Shame Soundtrack), "Hooked On You," and "Don't Rush." Songs from Tonight consist of "Let's Make Love," "If You (Lovin' Me)," "The Return," and "Meeting In My Bedroom." "We're Callin' You" is the only song from their last album Love Session with all the original crew. Thankfully they didn't include anything from their independent album that was released minus Little G. All in all, this was a good package of solid hits. You should definitely add The Best of Silk to the collection if you don't already own the original albums.

Oh lordy. These guys can sang!!! Freak Me would have to be one of the most sensual and sexiest songs ever sung. It's amazing and still raises my temperature. Freak Me, Happy Days and Meeting In My Bedroom are the best tracks here, but overall, it's all good. I should get a second copy in case this breaks from over play, but seriously, it's an amazing cd with stunning music and it's a must for any r 'n b fan. These guys are unfortunately very underated. I love them and I love this.

I think that they made a very good compilation of Silk. It's unfortunate that they left Elektra Records and decided to go on an independent label. This group knew how to sing it on the most sexy of songs. Freak Me went to No. 1, but I thought that the group had better songs than that, which are on this album. I especially like the bass-heavy Happy Days, Don't Rush, the hits from "Tonight"--Meeting In My Bedroom, Let's Make Love, If U, and We're Calling You. I especially like I Can Go Deep which was on the Low Down Dirty Shame soundtrack from '94 but they put it on their '95 album. The song's originally over 6 minutes (was on the single), but they cut it to 4:47 for both albums.
That song is so smooth with its calm basslines and romantic, lush landscape. I think that Silk had some memorable hits and got better at their craft as a vocal group. Very timely for them to release this album!

I WAS VERY PLEASED TO FIND THAT I COULD GET ALL OF MY SILK FAVORITES ON 1 CD. I ORIGINALLY WAS GOING TO PURCHASE THEIR CD ENTITLED "LOSE CONTROL" BUT THEN SAW THE ONE I PURCHASED. DON'T THINK I WOULD'VE EVER BEEN ABLE TO FIND THIS CD IN STORES UNLESS I SPECIALLY ORDERED IT.

....read in the CD booklet on how Silk is a combination of young gospel singers in the ATL who competed against one another in sing offs. One of the guy's cousins or uncles knew how to get the boys close to Keith Sweat...in fact it was an outdoor barbeque that they ended up at...Keith Sweat probably wouldn't give the the second eye if he hadn't heard them do Boys II Men type vocals to the kids in the guestroom of the spread. Keith invited the boys to the studio and the rest, as they say, is history. The charismatic Little G on vocals was added to the harmonists later. The CD has THE cuts from their 4 top-selling products including remixes of Freak Me (in which Little G relates how the album cut took a life of its own) and Happy Days. It is a good representative of 90's style hip-hop influenced R&B.

I must say this is the best CD because I have been looking for a wonderful Cd to rememeber the good old days back when I was in single digit age. The quality is wonderful, I could not ask for anything better.

I own the first 4 Silk albums and this album includes no new material. I was given this disc as a gift and enjoy it because it features the Freak Me remix which was out of print for a long time. This album is a good introduction to Silk for those unfamiliar or for someone that just wants the hit singles.

Everyone knows "Freak Me" but the main reason I enjoy the sultry cd so much is because of the songs I had not known about until purchasing this cd. Some critics might dog out these five talented gentlemen for their limited topics in what they sing about but I don't think a lot those critics will be women. This is a great collection to have and they still sound as fresh as they did in all of these songs as they did when debuted in '92.
