Mr. Burns runs for governor while Bart runs away from home, June 5, 2005
This review is from: The Best of The Simpsons, Vol. 5 - Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes On Every Fish/ Bart Vs. Thanksgiving [VHS] (VHS Tape)
We are into Season 2 of "The Simpsons" with the two episodes include on "The Best of 'The Simpsons': Volume 5." The only real commonalities between these two episodes are the idea of running (Mr. Burns for governor and Bart away from home). The fact that the first focuses on Mr. Burns and the second actually has Bart apologizing to his sister, which makes them a pretty atypical pair of episodes. Maybe that is why I think they are both above average episodes and two of the better ones from that second season.
Episode 17, "Two Cars In Every Garage And Three Eyes On Every Fish" (Written by Sam Simon & John Swartzwelder, First aired November 1, 1990) begins with Bart and Lisa catching a three-eyed fish while fishing near the Springfield Nuclear Reactor. Do you think there might be a connection? The government does and they send a team to investigate nuclear waste coming from the plant. Mr. Burns tries to bribe them, but that fails and he has to clean up the plant or have it shut down. Homer points out that if Mr. Burns was governor he could pass laws to keep the plant open and since this is actually a good idea Mr. Burns runs for governor against the incumbent, Mary Bailey (So we do not know if we should be thinking "It's a Wonderful Life" or "Citizen Kane" on this one). Mr. Burns even spins the three-eyed fish as just an improvement by Mother Nature since three eyes are better than two. Everything is looking good for old Monty until Marge serves him up a three-eyed fish for dinner. (4.5 Krusty Burgers)
Episode 20, "Bart vs. Thanksgiving" (Written by George Meyer, First aired November 22, 1990) is actually a rather touching episode of "The Simpsons." Lisa has made a decorative centerpiece for the family's Thanksgiving dinner featuring the heroines of American history (e.g., Susan B. Anthony, Georgia O'Keefe, and Marjorie Stoneman Douglas). But during a fight with Bart the centerpiece ends up in the fireplace. Lisa runs sobbing to her room and Bart is banished to his for ruining Thanksgiving. Bart runs away from home with Santa's Little Helper and ends up at a homeless shelter when a TV crew interviews him. Eventually Bart comes home and has an epiphany as he realizes what he did to his sister. Meanwhile, Lisa does a nice homage to Allen Ginsberg in her poem, "Howl of the Unappreciated" ("I saw the best meals of my generation destroyed by the madness of my brother"). The Bart balloon in the Thanksgiving parade is a nice touch and it is good to know that the Western Hemisphere is the dancinest hemisphere of all. (5 Krusty Burgers)
