In "Three Men and a Comic Book," Bart, Milhouse, and Martin invest their joint savings in a rare copy of a Radioactive Man comic book then succumb to greed and paranoia as each vies for the chance to keep it in his possession overnight. In "Lisa's Substitute," Miss Hoover is out sick with Lyme disease, so Lisa's class gets a substitute teacher: the highly engaging Mr. Bergstrom, who not only actually makes learning interesting but recognizes Lisa for the special child she is. Voiced by Dustin Hoffman (who used the pseudonym Sam Etic), he's her dream come true. Meanwhile, Bart runs for class president and seems actually capable of winning by making a mockery of the process--a terrific political satire. --Marshall Fine

5.0 out of 5 stars Lisa's Sub: Heartbreaking, devastating, and hilarious, June 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Best of The Simpsons, Vol. 9 - Three Men and a Comic Book/ Lisa's Substitute [VHS] (VHS Tape)
3 Men...Comic Book: Notable for the first big role of the hysterical Comic Book Guy (ten years later and we still don't know his name). Bart's last line is classic. Pretty funny overall. Lisa's Sub: The reason I bought this video. "The Simpsons" transcends just being a cartoon with this one. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better half-hour of drama anywhere on TV, even live-action. (Actually, especially live-action.) A fascinating character study of the most complex little person in prime time. She doesn't quite fit in with the family that she loves and is underappreciated and often ignored by the society she's growing up in. As she searches for some semblance of meaning and purpose, a compassionate, cultured teacher enters her life. Dustin Hoffman is impressive as her ideal lover/father figure. Not only is this the first (and probably best, running neck-and-neck to the future "Lisa's Wedding") in the long line of the troublesome Homer/Lisa relationship episodes, but watch closely in the first scene between Marge and Lisa. They reach some sort of understanding ("You have to understand that I feel that way about your father too!") that's subtly and realistically written. Bart's sub-plot is the standard (in other words, brilliant) satire from the early years. He is the outright funnier character, but Lisa's the star in this episode, and a very worthy one at that.

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect, August 21, 2001

This review is from: The Best of The Simpsons, Vol. 9 - Three Men and a Comic Book/ Lisa's Substitute [VHS] (VHS Tape)
3 Men and A Comic Book is a really funny episode (with a Wonder Years parody that is inspired and hilarious). Lisa's Substitute, though, is one of the best things ever to appear on television. It's not the funniest Simpsons, but it is far and away the best. The reviewer below pretty much summed it all up, but I just have to second it here. It's really touching and insightful, and just perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST EPISODES EVER!, August 16, 1999

This review is from: The Best of The Simpsons, Vol. 9 - Three Men and a Comic Book/ Lisa's Substitute [VHS] (VHS Tape)
When Bart, Milhouse and Martin put togather to buy a comic book they don't know what trouble it leads to. Lisa's class gets a part-time teacher and Lisa ends up getting a crush on him! Buy this video now! I really recomend it!
