The Most Complete Collection of Soeur Sourire in the World!,
By
This review is from: Best of Soeur Sourire (Audio CD)
No where will a fan of Soeur Sourire (The Singing Nun) find a more complete collection of her music from the convent to her recordings as Luc Dominique.
The sound quality is pure and the collection includes a German version of "Among the Stars" in addition to a video of Soeur Sourire singing "Dominique" among the ruins of a cathedral. This is a must have collection for all devoted fans of The Singing Nun. D.A. Chadwick Music from the Soul: The Singing Nun Story D.A. Chadwick/Florence Delaporte ISBN: 1413750761

The songs are low-key, sometimes cheerful, sometimes pensive. Dominique is the closest that it comes to rollicking. It's good car music.

A cursory skimming of the song titles find that they are in French or the German cut. No one is deceiving you here. Just enjoy them.

It had been a little while since I had heard Soeur Sourire's music but it is still beautiful.

While I understand that our dear Soeur Sourire had a tragic life, my feeling is that this music represents her in her happiest state, making music. I don't understand much French, but her words feel very warm and loving. While her lyrics and guitar playing are embellished with orchestral effects, it is her efforts that clearly guide the rest of the musicians. The remastering is finely done and allows one to hear the music's subtleties more and more deeply with each listen. The guitar playing sometimes is simple strumming and other times there are delicate twists to the playing of the notes. This is especially the case in the beginnings and endings of the songs. The feelings seem very genuine, without artifice.Granted, other artists may write, sing, or compose at a more sophisticated level, but when you consider Soeur Sourire does all of this, she comes across as a very complete artist, someone with a vision, even if a simple vision. Her diction is quite good and her overall impact is to be quite charming and graceful. She really is in a class by herself. For anyone studying French or German, this music can be a fun way to learn some words and pronunciation. For those like myself who speak neither language to any great degree, it still has a strong impact as abstraction. There is an earthy quality to the music that allows one to feel that they are in the presence of a real friend, someone who understands your pain and who knows how to comfort you. The music works well for both a serious listen and as background music for art-making or family events. No matter the occasion, Sister Smile is likely to put a smile on your face. :-{P} |
