5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sampling of Sophie B. Hawkins' Early Work
These are remarkable songs from a truly inspired artist. They show the depth of her poetic lyrics and the strength of her varied musical skills. The two major hits are "Damn I wish I was Your Lover" and "As I Lay Me Down." The remastering on these brings out some nice instrumentality. 2.0 out of 5 stars one star for each good song on the album
Most of the songs on this album are very self indulgent. That's great if you just want art, but not if you want to sell CDs. There are 2 well known, and listenable songs.

These are remarkable songs from a truly inspired artist. They show the depth of her poetic lyrics and the strength of her varied musical skills. The two major hits are "Damn I wish I was Your Lover" and "As I Lay Me Down." The remastering on these brings out some nice instrumentality. "Before I Walk on Fire" is an tour de force of "emotional instrospection and self assertion. "Only Love" and "Right Beside You" were follow-up hits that are pure gold. "I Want You" is a heartwrenching rendition of the Bob Dylan song. This is the type of CD that you can leave in your CD player for weeks at a time and never get tired of listening because ther is something new to discover with the multi-faceted lyrics and the beautifully layered musical composition. This is a true gem. GET IT NOW!!!
Also, consider Sophie B. Hawkins' post-Sony music on Timbre and Wilderness, which ranges from rock guitar rifts to extraordinary live blues with several beautiful and haunting soul-searching ballads in between.

This has all the songs that we all know plus some more. I had not been too exposed to Sophie's music, but I found that this CD is a good opportunity to get a good listen to her stuff. I think it's well worth checking out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Damn..., April 22, 2006

Sophie B Hawkins, best known for her hit single, "Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover," (by far her biggest and best hit) has now come out with this, her greatest hits album. Her follow up to her first single was "As I Lay Me Down," with is also a great song.

Hawkins has a very unique writing style that many will love. While you may not of heard much from her after "As I Lay Me Down," the rest of the songs on this CD are still quality.

A great album for any fan or Sophie or early 90s Pop/Rock. The nostalgia in this CD will surely have you reaching for the repeat button.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delicious appetizer before the main course, September 18, 2005

While it's impossible to please every fan when releasing a greatest hits or "best of" album, this one is truly an outstanding collection of Sophie B. Hawkins's songs from her first 2 albums, including the rare "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." My only complaint is the last track, a god-awful remix of "As I Lay Me Down." It says that Joe "The Butcher" Nicolo was responsible for this one. Well his nickname is certainly appropriate, because he has in fact butchered it. If I were the one in charge of this album I would have tossed that turkey and included "Savior Child" or "Carry Me" from Sophie's Tongues and Tails album instead.

If you're brand new to Sophie B. Hawkins, this is by far the best place to start with. BUT DON'T STOP HERE. Let this album be your appetizer, but make sure you also get the main course: ALL of her albums, as many singles as you can find, her The Cream Will Rise DVD, and whatever else you can get your hands on that reads the name Sophie B. Hawkins. Whatever this woman touches turns to gold. One question I would like to ask her if I ever had the chance to meet her (other than if she would be the mother of my children) is, how does she do it time and time again?

Simply great stuff.

I have just always liked Sophie's sophisticated, husky voice, and the music tracks in 'I wish I was your Lover' and in 'As I Lay Me Down'. Great songs, nicely performed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Her Best Known Songs, July 15, 2010

This review is from: The Best of Sophie B. Hawkins (Audio CD)
The best of Sophie B. Hawkins is a great collection of her best known songs. Though, the standout song of the album is one of her least known songs. The utterly spellbinding "only love" is, in my opinion, her definitive song, her magnum opus, about love and one of the principal reasons why I choose to buy this album. The best of Sophie B. Hawkins is a great album from a great artist.

Well, this review is biased because I like music. That there is a joke. If you like Sophie's hits from 1991 that you've already heard, I suggest you give this CD a listen. Besides doing a Dylan song, in a Dylan-sort of voice(although a little more on key), and the very familiar The Night They Drove Dixie Down(a Band song, very nice link there of Dylan and The Band, eh?), you might enjoy most of the other stuff, too. A good heart-beating dance piece and another 1991 hit. She has a website which is interesting, and so if you aren't familiar with her after these many years, you can catch up with her there.
