2.0 out of 5 stars Star Trek Fix, But..., August 29, 2006
By
Jim (San Francisco Bay Area) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best of Star Trek: Original Film Scores (Audio CD)
The music on this CD does not seem to be the same music I've heard in the movies. It's on the flat and tinny side and missing that big screen sound: crisp highs and stomach-rumbling lows. The quality is more like what you would hear on a mediocre AM radio station instead of a good FM station.

The case is beautiful though: really well done artwork and layout.

Star Trek is great but I wish I had purchased a different CD for the music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Star Trek: The Astral Symphony REPACKAGED, February 4, 2010
By
Mud Bog "King Kloy" (Cary, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best of Star Trek: Original Film Scores (Audio CD)
When this collection of movie themes came out in 91 it was titled Star Trek: The Astral Symphony. Same songs, same order. I can't vouch for the sound quality or the liner notes on this new cd. The cover is certainly not as cool (Enterprise on some red space stuff.) Anyways whatever they're calling this now, it is a fine selection of the best themes from the first 5 films. Horner's scores are my favorite (II & III) although mad props to Leonard Rosenman's work on IV. In Jerry Goldsmith's score for The Motion Picture you can really hear the majestic influence of Gustav Holst's Planets, especially on The Enterprise. V, being my least favorite movie, has my least favorite songs, but damned if my little fingers weren't playing that Klingon theme on every piano nearby.

At 8 years old it was my first musical purchase and Im kicking myself now for throwing away the cardboard longbox it originally came in ('member those?) I had a cool cd player back then that I'd program and rearrange the track listing on to fit my mental narratives. With the powerful visuals associated with these songs, I find myself pumped when I hear Enterprise Clears Moorings and Battle in the Mutara Nebula, reflective through Ilia's Theme, and jaunty during the more bouncing selections of The Voyage Home.

Otherwise, this is easily one of the most enjoyable cd's Ive bought/stolen ever. I'd buy the individual Wrath of Khan soundtrack as a lot of my favorite, well, everything is on there but for the casual classical listener this is perfect. If you like this also do yourself a favor and checkout Basil Poledouris' soundtrack for Conan The Barbarian.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of Five Films, January 29, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Best of Star Trek: Original Film Scores (Audio CD)
Of all the CD's I own, this is easily among my favorites. They got just about all the best themes from the first five Trek films on one album. Originally published as "Star Trek: The Astral Symphony", I first bought the cassette (under the original title) about four years ago and just recently upgraded to this CD.

Definately worth purchasing for anyone who enjoyed the soundtracks from the first five movies.
