Star Trek Fix, But...,
By Jim (San Francisco Bay Area) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best of Star Trek: Original Film Scores (Audio CD)
The music on this CD does not seem to be the same music I've heard in the movies. It's on the flat and tinny side and missing that big screen sound: crisp highs and stomach-rumbling lows. The quality is more like what you would hear on a mediocre AM radio station instead of a good FM station.
The case is beautiful though: really well done artwork and layout. Star Trek is great but I wish I had purchased a different CD for the music.

Star Trek: The Astral Symphony REPACKAGED,
By Mud Bog "King Kloy" (Cary, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best of Star Trek: Original Film Scores (Audio CD)
When this collection of movie themes came out in 91 it was titled Star Trek: The Astral Symphony. Same songs, same order. I can't vouch for the sound quality or the liner notes on this new cd. The cover is certainly not as cool (Enterprise on some red space stuff.) Anyways whatever they're calling this now, it is a fine selection of the best themes from the first 5 films. Horner's scores are my favorite (II & III) although mad props to Leonard Rosenman's work on IV. In Jerry Goldsmith's score for The Motion Picture you can really hear the majestic influence of Gustav Holst's Planets, especially on The Enterprise. V, being my least favorite movie, has my least favorite songs, but damned if my little fingers weren't playing that Klingon theme on every piano nearby.
At 8 years old it was my first musical purchase and Im kicking myself now for throwing away the cardboard longbox it originally came in ('member those?) I had a cool cd player back then that I'd program and rearrange the track listing on to fit my mental narratives. With the powerful visuals associated with these songs, I find myself pumped when I hear Enterprise Clears Moorings and Battle in the Mutara Nebula, reflective through Ilia's Theme, and jaunty during the more bouncing selections of The Voyage Home. Otherwise, this is easily one of the most enjoyable cd's Ive bought/stolen ever. I'd buy the individual Wrath of Khan soundtrack as a lot of my favorite, well, everything is on there but for the casual classical listener this is perfect. If you like this also do yourself a favor and checkout Basil Poledouris' soundtrack for Conan The Barbarian.

The Best of Five Films,
By A Customer
This review is from: Best of Star Trek: Original Film Scores (Audio CD)
Of all the CD's I own, this is easily among my favorites. They got just about all the best themes from the first five Trek films on one album. Originally published as "Star Trek: The Astral Symphony", I first bought the cassette (under the original title) about four years ago and just recently upgraded to this CD.Definately worth purchasing for anyone who enjoyed the soundtracks from the first five movies.

The CD is a great compilation from the scores of the first five Trek films. Nice to have the original orchestras from the films.

Old Star Trek Music,

This review is from: Best of Star Trek: Original Film Scores (Audio CD)
The new Star Trek movie (excellent!) reminded me of the music in the old ST movies, so I bought this CD. Any fan of the original movies will enjoy listening to this, as pieces compiled will remind you of Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, and the Voyage Home, the best three films in that series. The music is taken from the first Motion Picture and runs through #5, with most of it pulled from the three movies listed.
My only complaint, and the reason this did not get five stars from me, is not including the wonderfully evil music from ST, the Motion Picture, wherein V'Ger is attacking the Klingon birds of prey at the start of the movie. There is a truncated version of it included in the first selection on the CD, but the original sound effects were replaced with really odd noises and that ruined the entire piece for me. Even after not seeing this movie for many years, I could still remember that particular piece of music, it was so powerful, and to not include that on this CD in its entirety was a travesty. Otherwise, the music is great and well worth owning.

I'm an original trekkie from the tv series, but I preferred the first five movies more, with the original cast. I always thought the music was inspiring and beautiful. This cd has terrific versions of those first five movies. I don't enjoy the later movies as much, so I was pleased to find this cd which concentrates on my favorite Star Trek films.

Great Music for Trekkers,
By "jcchollywood" (Dallas, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best of Star Trek: Original Film Scores (Audio CD)
This cd truly marks the best of Star Trek for it has selections from the all the great Star Trek scores (I thru V). Horner, Goldsmith and Rosenman all had great compositions and they are all represented here. One can argue that for the most part, the best pieces from each of those five movies are included. The only exception I think exists is with Star Trek III, where "Stealing the Enterprise" was for some reason left off. My favorites on this cd are: "Geneis Countdown, Hospital Chase, Battle of Mutara Nebula, and Prologue and Main Title." This cd is great though for making new fans of Star Trek music. It was a tape of similar music that got me interested. I would recommend this to anyone who wishes to have a collection of great music.

If you've got all of the movie soundtracks (like I do), then don't bother with this one, because it's just picking the highlights from the first 6 movies.
