4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Variety, December 28, 2002

This review is from: The Best of Stargate SG-1 : Season 1 - Original Television Soundtrack (Audio CD)
As an avid fan of Stargate SG-1, I bought this CD without a second thought.

Thankfully, I was not disappointed. The music is good, but its real strength is its variety. From the intense anticipation of "The Enemy Within", to the grand, yet calm "Nox Theme", this soundtrack just about has it all. Most of the tracks are theme-oriented, with enough variation to keep it from being repetitive.

The only problem with this CD is that it really helps to have seen the episode from which the track is drawn, as the music closely follows the action. Thus, if you have no real exposure to SG-1, this CD loses some (but not all) of its effect.

5.0 out of 5 stars one for the fans, May 6, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Best of Stargate SG-1 : Season 1 - Original Television Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This CD is really one for the fans. If you've not watched Stargate SG-1 before, then it will be very limited in its' appeal.
I personally enjoyed the CD, as I could relate the music back to the particular episodes in which they appeared. Some of the tracks are sweet and melodic, others are more ominious, so it doesn't come up short on variety.
The music sounds, for the most part, rather sythesised (which is why, if you are used to sprawling epic soundtracks from mainstram movies, I generally don't recommend this if you have never watched the show). Tracks are usually a mixture of synthesised sounds combined with more organic notes from traditional instruments, creating a very "sci fi" sound.
This is a great CD to work and study to as it provides great background music without being too intrusive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hoping To Hear More From Later Seasons, April 22, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Best of Stargate SG-1 : Season 1 - Original Television Soundtrack (Audio CD)
First, there are two Stargate SG-1 Soundtracks out there, one is just from the Two-Hour pilot film and this one from the first season. I've ordered the Pilot CD, but it hasn't arrived (yet).

However, the Season 1 CD has more variety since it is from several episodes. Its from GNP, the sci-fi soundtrack specialists. In fact, when I bought this CD it was priced promotionally by GNP with a Stargate SG-1 DVD.

This CD sometimes betrays the fact some of the instruments are synthetic, but it seems somehow appropriate for sci-fi.

More important is the music itself, which is often soaring and sometimes moving as it evokes scenes of struggle with the enemies rooted in Egyptian mythology. It is also skillful in its emphasis of wonder at the diversity of the universe.

It is the wonder at the universe and the spirit of discovery that is at the heart of the series (along with the wise-cracks and heroism of Richard Dean Anderson's character). This music is largely used as background but is certainly foreground-worthy and well above similar offerings in the genre.
