Biography

In the dying days of Jefferson Airplane, Paul Kanter released a solo album, Blows Against the Empire (1970), with the help of some of his bandmate buddies. He credited it to Paul Kantner and Jefferson Starship though the release pre-dated the actual formation of Jefferson Starship by four years. In 1974, with Airplane over and Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady concentrating on Hot Tuna, Dragon FlyRead more in Amazon's Jefferson Starship Store

3.0 out of 5 stars You like Starship? Are you an Airplane collector? This set is for you, December 28, 2010
This review is from: Best (Audio CD)
Look, I'm not gonna lie. I'm not a big Starship fan. I love the Jefferson Airplane and like the Jefferson Starship, but Starship was never my cup of tea. So understand that I am no Starship fanatic and I'm not going to pretend to be one. What I will say is this: If you are a Jefferson Airplane fan or a Jefferson Starship fan and you don't really care for Starship, but want a quick look at their six year (1985-1991) career, than 'The Best of Starship' (the BMG import version, NOT the CD version that's widely available in the US with 10 tracks) is the only set you'll need. Plain and simple.

This album spans 'Knee Deep in the Hoopla' (1985), 'No Protection' (1987), 'Love Among the Cannibals' (1989), and the compilation 'Greatest Hits 1979-1991: Ten Years and Change' (1991), which featured Jefferson Starship tracks in addition to two new tracks recorded in 1991. Both new songs from that compilation are here.

This album has all of the basics and then some. 'We Built This City,' 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now,' 'Sara,' and 'The Burn' are all here, which should be enough to convince the casual Starship fan or the curious Airplane fan that this is a good set.

The sound quality is also excellent. BMG did an extensive remastering process on all of the tracks, so it sounds great. The tracks are crisp and crystal clear, and sound great on any speakers.

Overall, I'm not a Starship fan, however I'm sure many of you that stumble upon this page will be. But, if you are a Jefferson Airplane/Starship fan who is looking to buy a Starship set just to fulfill your duty as a loyal fan, than the import 'The Best of Starship' is a fine choice. Yeah, I know, it's expensive, and for many of you, it's worth more than you'll want to spend, but if you ever find this set under $15 and you want to know what Starship sounded like outside of 'We Built This City,' than 'The Best of Starship' is not a bad place to look.

Recommended if you are a Starship fan or a curious Jefferson Airplane or Jefferson Starship fan who feels it is necessary to have at least one Starship album in their collection.
