STEPTACULAR!!,
By MilkyBarKid (U.K) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
This is a condensed version of the "Gold" album we have in the U.K, but it contains many of the highlights from the Steps catalogue. If you like uncomplicated, fun pop this album is a must! Like ABBA before them, Steps have the ability to produce catchy tracks guarenteed to get any party going. This album contains the two U.K No1 singles the classic, "Tragedy" (how many of you can do the dance?!) and the 70's disco sound of "Stomp"; every other track made the U.K top 5. Steps will always be remembered for their dance routines and up-tempo songs, but to redress the balance you find the original U.K version of "One For Sorrow", "Heartbeat" and their last ever U.K single, "Words Are Not Enough" (all of which are slowies). Sadly, this version ommits some of the greatest ever Steps tracks, namely Lisa's solos "Never Get Over You", "Bittersweet" and "Just Like The First Time" - maybe if they had been included people would see why she was the best Step girl! If you like this album, get the U.K albums - there are some great pop songs on them! The key to liking Steps is not to take them too seriously!

Best Pop Band of the Decade,
By dareman "dareman" (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
For Americans forced to listen to the TRL saccharine R&B and/or pseudo alt-rock produced by American pop solo artists and groups over the past 5 years, this best-of CD is the perfect alternative.Just because pop groups and pop music are "manufactured" these days doesn't mean it can't be good. This British quintet has been producing the best pure modern pop in recent years. Those lucky enough to have seen their videos know how this group projects a charm and charisma unparalleld in this "boy band - diva" world. Combining the perfect combination of danceable pop, easy-to-follow dance steps (hence their name) and good looks, this is the best pop band in the world never to have a Top 10 hit in America (band member Claire Richards has the best female voice in pop). To our great disappointment, their recent breakup means that we'll never see Claire, Lisa, Faye, H and Lee perform here again. But this CD, is a great way to experience pure fun pop music at it's most "Steptacular" best. Highlights include "One for Sorrow", "Stomp", and "Chain Reaction".

"Best of" is the best ever.....,
By Andrew (Kentucky, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
This has to be my absolute favorite album of all time (disreguarding the UK import "Gold:Greatest Hits"). This album truly is the best of Steps. It has 4 new tracks to the USA ("One For Sorrow" ["One For Sorrow (US MIX)" has only been released in america], "Better Best Forgotten", "Chain Reaction" and "Words Are Not Enough"). Although some of these songs weren't released as singles in the usa, they are some of the best. All the way from their first single (5, 6, 7, 8) to some of the best covers ever (Tragedy, Last Thing On My Mind, Chain Reaction) to some of their biggest hits (One For Sorrow, Stomp and It's The Way You Make Me Feel) and all the way to the last single (Words Are Not Enough). It is a true collection of best hits, and this is just a preview. If you want the full story, i suggest you get "Gold:Greatest Hits" from the UK, with another 7 tracks (and another 3 unlreased US tracks; Baby Don't Dance, When I Said Goodbye and Only In My Dreams) but this is a great one too. Or you could buy both like me!

Everybody loves Steps!,
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
Steps is one of the hottest groups in the UK, where their records sell like hotcakes! This is their amazing hits album, which has a cover of the Bee Gees "Tragedy." Well, it'd be a "tragedy" if you skipped this CD, because Steps are among the best. Buy now!

Steps...why did you leave us?,

Steps may be gone now, but at least we can still listen to them through their albums. This is the slimmed down version of Gold: Greatest Hits. People complain about the lack of tracks on this album, however people have to remember that this version of the greatest hits is marketed towards the US...which would mean...us! Like,no way. Avid Steps fans will buy Gold, while the casual listener will pleasently enjoy this best of. It has the disco thriller "Chain Reaction" (which is reason enough for a purchase) plus other fantastic Steps classics. Worthy of a purchase for the young and the young at heart. Plus, who can resist "Tragedy"?

Getting Stepped On,
By k. lane "jester1436" (Florida, USA) - See all my reviews

Steps were a contagious five piece pop act, a guilty pleasure of ABBA-esque pop brilliance, but never managed to breakthrough in the United States. They released two albums, "Step One" and "Buzz", which yielded some singles, none of which were hits on these shores. The albums however, were both great, the latter being almost the same as the Brit edition, while the former is a unique mash-up of their first two albums in the UK. Almost every track on that release was a British hit single, so the need for this set is very low honestly. Only a few songs are different, with the Best Of's "One For Sorrow" being the original version not released here. The hit single "Better Best Forgotten", which was not included on the first album is finally released here, and two of the Steps "Gold" singles are included too. While all the songs are great, every last on a hooky pop tune, the packaging and release are all generally weak. Why release a best of in a country were you never had any hits? It reaks of money lust, in my opinion. A good bunch of tracks, but for the real deal hits collection, go after "Gold".

The "Best" of STEPS???,
By "frostslamagra050385" (Olney, MD USA) - See all my reviews

I have been a fan of STEPS since I saw them perform on Disney. They were amazing!! At any rate, I jumped at the oppurtunity to buy their albums, but I must say that I was a bit disappointed that they didn't release Gold here. The Best of STEPS is a relatively good album, its just missing quite a few good tracks. But I guess as Americans we get deprived! :-) Most of the songs are from the US release of StepOne. They have like one from the UK version and a couple from Buzz. Personally, I think it's a decent album, but it could've been better with more tracks!!!!

Steps will make you Dance (While The Music Still Goes On),
By A Customer
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
Horrible ABBA pun, I know, but Steps reminds me a lot of ABBA in both style and quality of their music. They all have great voices and are extremely talented in what they do. "Best of Steps" showcases the best Steps songs in one convenient collection. I highly recommend you pick this one up if you enjoy either Steps or ABBA, or even just if you like great dance music. Below I have listed the best and worst tracks (there are only two bad tracks) on the album. Superb Tracks: Tragedy, Deeper Shade Of Blue, Chain Reaction, One For Sorrow, Love's Got A Hold On My Heart (The latter two songs remind me so much of ABBA's hits The Winner Takes It All and Under Attack, respectively). Skip These Tracks: 5, 6, 7, 8 and Words Are Not Enough *Please note that the song "One For Sorrow" is not the peppy U.S. mix, but rather a slower ballad.

This is a good sized album with 3 brand new songs for the U.S. corwd! Steps have been hugely successful all over thw rold, except America. They have ahd hits everywehre, liek Tragedy, and my personal favorite One For Sorrow!...All of the, are incredible to dance to, like Deeper Shade of Blue and the brand new Chain Reaction. Steps have never claimed to be anything mroe than just a pop group, and that is what you get on the album. Thirteen great tracks that are well worth the money.

5,6,7,8...Bye. Bye? Is that it, then?,
By
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
The Bangles, Missing Persons, 'til tuesday all hit the three-album mark before turning in a greatest hits portfolio. Given the calibre of these groups, it makes one want to say, "Is that it then?" Steps also fits in that category. Three albums and at the end of the year, the unexpected "Farewell, so long, goodbye" that leaves fans in a lurch.Hearing the original version of "One For Sorrow" instead of the U.S. edit that was on the Step One album, well, it isn't that different. It just lacks the opening blast of positive pop that permeates throughout the album. The backbeat is mellower compared to the other version, but it's still listenable. With most of the hits concentrated from Step One (8), and Buzz (2), one from their first album, and 2 new songs, the compilation is tight. The nod to old school disco of "Stomp," the country-stepping "5,6,7,8," the 80's-Kylie bop of "Deeper Shade Of Blue," and the Jessica Simpson-ish or Britneyesque "It's The Way You Make Me Feel" are just a few of the hits concentrated in this collection. Of the new songs, they cover the Bee Gees again with "Chain Reaction" and it doesn't disappoint. "Words Are Not Enough" is a mid-paced number that's a pleasant finisher to the album. Well, they didn't get in trouble like Smoke Bowl 7 and they quit before they started hating each other like the Beatles or Spice Girls, so give them some credit for going out early. Bye guys, and thanks for the music. |
