Old school blues mixed up with rock & roll from one of the whitest guys on the planet. Doesn't get much better than this. A really good collection of his legacy. There's always a few songs that don't get on a greatest hits compilation. Then there are always a few that make you wonder why it's considered a "hit". For me, this effort has all good songs. I am a Johnny Winter fan but I don't like everything he did.
Although my preference for high resolution music is surround sound, there are several stereo discs I own. This is one of them. A good stereo SACD should give a wideness to the sound almost giving the sense of being "surrounded". This disc does that. The sound is sharp but not bright. No muddines either. A couple of songs needed some slight adjusment. At times you may feel that the sound is not as quality for an SACD as it should be. I don't know why but for some reason it seemed like Johnny was never given the best equipment to record on. Even in the day my friends and I thought so. With that in mind I am not making that a consideration. The "roughness" that sometimes comes out actually lends to the grittyness of what old time blues may have been like in some dark, dank, smoke-filled saloon. A definate must for Johnny Winter fans and high resolution misic fans looking to broaden their collection. Unless you come across an exceptional deal, always spend your money on what you like before trying to fill holes in your collection. |
