4.0 out of 5 stars Jump On This!!
Even without the classic Rappers Delight, I would have bought this this CD for Apache and 8th Wonder alone. Brings you back to a place and time when Hip-Hop was about the FUN instead of the GUN. To the misguided reviewer below "Super Pimp" - I for one DO get the point that you were just joking in order to get people upset. The only other alternative is that you really...

4.0 out of 5 stars pretty good greatest hits collection, June 9, 2001
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
the reason this cd gets 4 stars instead of 5 is because I bought this cd thinking i was gonna get the full 15 minute version of rappers delight, which i didnt, so i was greatly disappointed in that. Other then that, this cd if filled with a bumch of feel good rap songs from back in the day. tracks 1 and 2 are the best in my opinion, but there arent really any BAD songs on the whole cd, seeing how it is a greatest hits cd. If your not a huge fan of sugarhill gang, just soneone looking for some good ald school rap, then go get sugarhill gangs first greatest hits cd, but if your a big sugarhill gnag fan, like me, then go pick up there first greatest hits cd and this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars dissin the Ol'school????, November 5, 2004
Of course the Album is great, it represents the beginning (even though I remember King Tim III preceeding it). Saying that Ol'School is crap because something that came out later is "better" or more sophisitcated is like saying the wright brothers' plane was a piece of crap because an F18 fighter would kick it's ass. Anyone who doesn't understand that will have a tough life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A More Innocent Age of Rap, June 1, 2001

If you were a teenager at the time, or you just happen to like Old School pre-misogyny, pre-blood and guts, good times and feeling good rap, this is for you. With Rapper's Delight and it's funny tales of Superman and the Chicken tasting like wood and the atmosphereic "Apache," "Hot Summer day," and "The Lover in You." It's all about smiling, dancing, and having fun. BTW, Rapper's Delight wasn't really the 1st rap record-the funkier "King Tim III" by the Fatback Band which came out a few months earlier, was.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rappers Delight- The Start of the Rap/Hip-Hop Era, September 19, 1999
By A Customer
When we think of old school rap, the first thing that comes to mind is the Sugar Hill gang. Back in the 70's, they were what brought us to dance clubs and parties. If it weren't for them, modern day rap/hip-hop wouldn't even exist the way it does. So in a sense we owe them a lot.

The Sugarhill Gang brought Rap to the mainstream and in many ways cut a path for others to follow and build upon. Listening to this album, their nostalgic appeal is obvious. It is upbeat with catchy hooks and fun lyrics. The beat will get your head bopping and toes tapping. This is timeless music about partying, having some good fun from "Back in the Day" where the worst thing you could be is a "Sucka MC."

Recommended songs: "Rapper's Delight," "Apache," "Kickin' It Live From 9 to 5."

What this is not: Do not expect the technical sophistication of today's recording artists with 48 track recording and computer assist. Do not expect to find some social message - the only message here is having fun at the club or party.

Personal Note: The Sugarhill Gang was my first exposure to Rap music more than 20 years ago. It is good to hear rap without someone "Bustin a cap," or demeaning women. As to its staying power, I played this for the college student hire in my office and it was a big hit with her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jump On It, January 11, 2003
By
One of the most influental rap bands, and perhaps the most popular of our generation. This album put "SCHOOL" in the phrase "OLD SCHOOL", all rappers took their lessons from this grovin' album. Just like the line in "APACHE" says "JUMP ON IT". This cd is full of great rhyme & rhythm, taking its samples from CHIC to create it's most memorable track "RAPPER'S DELIGHT", truely offer's you some "GOOD TIMES". SUGARHILL GANG is perhaps the one rap album that any music lover should have in their collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, March 24, 2005
By
Sugarhill Gang's biggest hits are collected on this single-disc compilation. In addition to "Rapper's Delight" -- the first rap single to reach the pop Top Ten -- the group's seven other R&B hits are included on the disc, plus three other singles that never made the charts. All of the songs are presented in their original 12" versions. Not all of the material is first-rate -- in retrospective, the group's old-school groove tended to be a little simplistic, monotonous, and too polished, while their rhymes were frequently stilted and sometimes just outright silly -- but this music, especially "Rapper's Delight," is important historically. Most casual fans of old-school hip-hop will be content with purchasing "Rapper's Delight" on a various artists collection, but for those wanting to dig deeper into the trio's history, The Best of Sugarhill Gang is a defintive retrospective.

4.0 out of 5 stars Huge Historical Significance; the Music is Good, July 26, 2007
This is definitely a good CD. It's hits from the Sugarhill Gang, whom many musical historians have designated as the first rappers. Or maybe it's that "Rapper's Delight" has been thought of as the first rap song? Rapper's Delight kicks off this album, and it's very catchy, chock full of creative lyrics [unlike today's swear-filled rap records] that make for a funny song. The full version, which is here, is very long. The rest of the disc shows itself very much a product of the times in which the songs were written, the early 80s. That's fine, but it's just that a number of the raps don't really have the flow I usually associate with rap. So the record ultimately didn't impress me enough for 5 stars. Good stuff tho, definitely worth 4.
