Leaves much to be desired.,

I've been a huge fan of the Sylvers since their 70's hey-day. The material here isn't bad. Not by any stretch. But this is the FOURTH Sylvers compilation to be released in the last ten years or so and they all seem to have the same tired songs on them. Perhaps it has something to do with licensing, but there are significant Sylvers tunes that have been left off these hits packages. Just last night I dug out 1978's "Forever Yours" album and put it on the turntable. The title track and "Swept For You Baby" (written by Smokey Robinson) should be included on any true greatest hits package. (I remember the songs getting some airplay in Chicago that year!) With the exception of "Don't Stop, Get Off," this most excellent Sylvers album is generally overlooked with each compilation CD. I don't mind "The Roulette Wheel of Love" and "Ain't No Doubt About It," but come on! Let's delve a little deeper into this family's catalog and give us fans something more!

I've always dug the Sylvers&wished the Record Company would drop a Full Box Set on them.a Very Talented Musical Family.Leon Sylvers went on to Become one of the Baddest Producers in the Biz.I like the Cuts here but hope one day for more than the Usual fare that is released from them.

This is where it gets exasperating: most rock artists, even mid-league ones, have had full reissues. Soul, beyond the heavies of the heavies, means you are relegated to wonder bread bests ofs.
There is a road between sweet soul and funk and the Sylvers did fantastic traveling down the middle. If fortunate enough to have a turn table, you can find the vinyl in second hand shops without a lot of legwork. The music on here is great, but does not give nearly sufficient overview, never mind a grain of depth. Wait until this band is given proper reissues, or put away that silly Ipod, get yourself a Techniques, and go get the wax.

If you love 70s disco, you'll love The Sylvers. Hot Line, Boogie Fever, Cotton Candy just to name a few. No self-respecting disco connoisseur would miss adding this CD to their collection.

Good for beginners, but too much good stuff missing,

A lot of kids who are interested in classic 70s Soul or hip hop beat jackers may have heard of the Sylvers from those of us who were actually there in the 70s, but their best stuff is difficult to find.
This is not bad as a budget set or intro to this great group. It has a few of their best known stuff from the "Something Special" Lp (1976) such as "Hot Line," Boogie fever," and "High School dance." Good bouncy disco pop and soul from the era that still makes one happy today. It also includes my favorite stomper from them-the largely forgotten 1978 chant "Don't Stop Get Off" which used to rock basketball games in High school gyms. This is a good and true representative of what was REALLY popular among Black teenagers and Soul radio listeners at the time. Unfortuantely, while all of this is great for those who want a basic appreciation for what caused us now grown 70s kids to love these folks so much, old heads will lament the exclusion of some really wonderful stuff such as the ballads "Wish That I Could talk to You," "Fool's Paradise" (an uncharacteristic message tune) and best of all, the 1973 summer classic jam from Brother Foster "Misdemeanor" (hip hop lovers take note-this is the beat behind the DOC's "It's Gettin' Funky"). This stuff WAS available on the TRUE "Best of Sylvers" cd "Boogie fever-The Best of The Sylvers," but that is sadly no longer available. So until that comes back into print or is available elsewhere used, you'll have to make do with this for the time being. However, it's a great place to start getting into the Sylvers and will whet the appetites of novices for more. As Foster Sylvers says on "Misdemeanor"-PICK UP ON THE FACT!

Young Blood Digs Old School,

The Sylvers are awesome. Being a member of Generation X, I dig music from the 1920's to the early 1980's. Music back in that era had a meaning, told a story, and touched your heart. You could relate to the lyrics of the song. This album talks about the innocence of being young. From "High School Dance" to "Lovin' Me Back," took me back to middle school and high school. The music today is lacking all of that and then some. No feeling, no pride, just noise. The new recording artists could take a lesson from this group and others, a lesson on being real.
