Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Type O Negative's gothically tinged metal, has garnered them both critical and commercial success. 1993's Bloody Kisses was the first album to achieve Gold and Platinum status in the Roadrunner Records catalog. It's successor, 1996's October Rust, also went Gold, thus solidifying Type O's roots in the sediment of the burgeoning Active Rock genre.

About the Artist

BROOKLYN born TYPE O NEGATIVE have been the ruler by which GOTHIC METAL is measured. Their Classic PLATINUM certified album BLOODY KISSES and GOLD Certified OCTOBER RUST brought the band to the forefront of ACTIVE ROCK RADIO in the mid 90's and has garned them both critical acclaim and commercial success. Touring the world over, these tracks have become anthems for Goth-Metal heads worldwide.

Wait, didn't Roadrunner already do a "Best Of" for Type O Negative about six years ago? If memory serves me correctly, they've only released one studio album since. Hmmmm...

Sounds like: Roadrunner cashing in, again.

The Good:
- "Highway Star," a Deep Purple cover that popped up on a NASCAR soundtrack some years ago is included.

The Bad:
- Aside from one song, it's all material we've heard before, and with really bland packaging to boot!

Future: I can see this one sitting on the shelves for ages before some unsuspecting sucker snatches it up. This is a virtually useless release.

Personally: I love Type O Negative, always been one of my favorites. But considering how well done "The Least Worst Of" was and the fact that all of their studio albums are worth having, this "Best Of" collection just screams "Greed." No wonder so many bands leave Roadrunner. Type O Negative aren't even there anymore and their catalogue is still being beaten into the ground.

Best Listened To When: All other Type O CD's fall off the face of the Earth.

unless you are a type o completist like myself you should possibly buy the extra tracks digi-pak version of least worst of instead. this compilation contains the previously unreleased "highway star".also note that tracks 2,3,5,8 and 9 are not the full length versions. a money grab by roadrunner in my opinion...new cd "profit of doom" coming halloween!...peace!

I recently became a Type O Negative fan (about two decades too late, right?)so I've been looking for the individual albums "Bloody Kisses" and "October Rust" in stores. The closest music store to me was a Best Buy, and all they had was this so I settled for it. As a greatest hits album, it had a pretty good selection of songs, including the never before released NASCAR anthem they wrote. The problem is that about 2/3 of this album are the radio edit "clean" versions of the songs, which is odd considering that they put the full, unedited version of "Unsuccessfully Coping With the Natural Beauty of Infedility" on as the first song. Why would anybody possibly do this? I understand if Roadrunner wanted to cash in on Type O Negative one last time before they left the label, but why would you put the shortened, butchered versions of the songs on the said product? That's as insulting to the band and the fans as it is a very disastrous business decision. I felt like I bought Iron Maiden's legendary Somewhere In Time only to find that all the songs were cover versions by a third grade recorder wind ensemble. Overall, steer clear of this album. If you're a veteran Type O Negative fan, you have no reason to buy this, and if you're a new Type O Negative fan, I urge you to dig deeper for either the actual albums, or even a different greatest hits album ("the Least worst of" or so on). Not to mention the late Peter Steele himself disapproved of this album: [...] (1:50 or so)

Roadrunner is known for milking older bands that made their label famous after they depart, and the "Best of Type O Negative" is no exception. Considering there already is a "best of" Type O compilation (the far superior "The Least Worst Of"), the aforementioned statement only gets proven further. There are songs featured here which any Type O fans would come to expect to see on a supposed "best of" from the mighty goth group, like "Black No. 1", "Christian Woman", the rocking cover of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl", and "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend", but the only real attraction here for longtime fans is "Highway Star", which was only ever featured on a Nascar compilation (I'm not sure what the exact ratio of Nascar fans to Type O listeners is, but it is worth a listen). However, other fan favorites, like "Creepy Green Light", "I Like Goils", "Blood & Fire", and more material from the classic "Slow, Deep, and Hard" rightfully belong here to make this cash-in compilation a true "best of". Then again, if you are a true Type O fan, then chances are you already own every album and possibly "The Least Worst Of", and don't need this disc, unless you feel like purchasing some fodder for your skeet shoot. Worth checking out for newbie fans to the band or casual listeners maybe, but they are better off picking up "Least Worst Of", and this is avoidable for pretty much everyone else.

What the Hell is this? Didn't they already put out a "best of" cd, called "The Least Worst of"??? This one just adds a crappy cover and two songs from their last godawful cd. Skip this and get "Least Worst...".

Sure, type o negative has "the least worst of" greatest hits album out there already, and it is by far a five star album all the way. The reason I did not give this a five star rating is soley because it is a re-release of what has already been done, and a milking of the Type O Name. But, it still is a good CD. With all of the hits, and One track that many folks may not have (Highway Star from the NBC Nascar Compilation). I myself am a completest like another reviewer below, so this was a must buy CD for me, but wouldn't be a bad place for a newcomer to start, especially if they get it on sale such as I did. This would open them up to the world of Type O Negative, which more people should be privy to. These guys have been around for quite a few years, have been a funny, entertaining band that tries to stay fresh with every new album. Can't wait till later this fall for their new Album to come out.

Whoa Roadrunner must be getting desperate
This kind of thing ticks me off. Type O can't do anything cause it's contractually out of their hands, and they can't even say "Don't buy it" cause they'd be dropped from the label and sued for all they had and they'd never record again. I am extremely worried they'll do this crap to... Read More
