5.0 out of 5 stars Some of the best, April 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Best of Tchaikovsky (Audio CD)
I am what you would consider a hard-core fan of classical music, but I really must admit it was none other than Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky who drew me in, with his Nutcracker suite. Even if you hate all other classical music, you will enjoy the Nutcracker.

However, the highlight of Tchaikovsky's work is the 1812 Overture (thought I heard that Tchaikovsky hated the piece himself). A common myth is that it was written for the War of 1812, actually he wrote it in 1882 to illustrate Russia's triumph over Napoleon. The finale is performed with the chimes and canons that made this piece famous.
