5.0 out of 5 stars The Booming Baritone of Love, September 3, 2000

This review is from: Best of Teddy Pendergrass (Audio CD)
Teddy Pendergrass is an underrated soul legend; both for his obvious, unique talent and for the influence he's had on contemporary soul balladeers like R. Kelly, K-Ci & JoJo and Carl Thomas. He is rarely mentioned alongside Marvin, Smokey or Donny Hathaway but, as a vocalist, he is easily in the same league. This CD is the best single-disc compilation of Teddy's years on the Philadelphia International label. All the hits are present and accounted for: "Close The Door", "When Somebody Loves You Back" "Love TKO", "Life Is A Song Worth Singing" and "Turn Off The Lights". In the annals of quiet storm soul, the classic "seduction" coda of "Come Go With Me" is totally unrivalled for its genuine sensuality (". . .you look so nice, you look so sweet" -- that nice, sweet girl's virtue never stood a chance against TP).

This CD is far superior to the domestic "Greatest Hits" collection because it contains some of his key songs, which for some reason were excluded from the "Greatest Hits" CD. The aching "I Can't Live Without Your Love" features one of his most compelling vocals. A barnstormer in its own right, "You Can't Hide From Yourself" is reminiscent of his earlier uptempo stuff as the lead voice for Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. Also included is his smoldering duet with Stephanie Mills on Peabo Bryson's "Feel The Fire". Stephanie is also featured on "Take Me In Your Arms Tonight" (but you'll have to pick up her greatest hits CD to get the sublime "Two Hearts"). Stephanie and Teddy had great chemistry, and it's a shame they haven't recorded together lately. Finally, Teddy is responsible for the best version of Ashford & Simpson's "Is It Still Good To Ya" ever committed to vinyl, that song alone makes this CD a must-have.

...talkin 'bout a fifty-fifty love (yeah...)
...okay, OKAY!! I KNOW yall tired of hearin me go on and on about Teddy Pendergrass, but I must be havin some kind of 20 year delayed reaction or somethin, because I am SO feelin the man...i can't tell you how many times I've walked around the house singin, "it's so gooood, gooood lovin somebod-ay, when somebody loves you back..." it's like the song is stuck stubbornly in the sticky recesses of my mind...cain't dig it out...only thing seems to help is listening to more and more of his music...my guy ron is right (lissen to him!)...fellas, if you don't have it in the collection for you, at LEAST have the sense to get it for HER...

4.0 out of 5 stars The Teddy Anthology to Own, July 22, 2007

This review is from: Best of Teddy Pendergrass (Audio CD)
This "Best of Collection" beats the others because it contains most of his hits, including the duet with Stephanie Mills, "Feel The Fire". I've been looking for a good collection/anthology of Teddy for a while now. They all have come up short either in the song selections or like the one I just recently brought from Best Buy --The Best Of Teddy Pendergrass (Essentials), it wasn't the original recording... This is truly the Teddy Pendergrass anthology to own, an awesome selection of the original recordings...... Bar None!!!

This review is from: Best of Teddy Pendergrass (Audio CD)
No one collection or anthology could do an artist of Teddy Pendergrass' importance full justice but this excellent CD brings you some of his greatest hits and other songs that made him a living legend. Teddy was such an important figure in the R&B music scene from 1977-82 that his first five solo albums were all (back in the day) indispensable for any serious soul fan's library. Teddy's influence is still felt strongly today and this CD offers ample proof of why Teddy was and will always be one of the soul ballad's undisputed master singers.
