4.0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL DEEP HOUSE/GARAGE FOR THE SOUL, BUT..., January 3, 2003

I love TEN CITY, always have...in fact, my FIRST experience hearing "HOUSE MUSIC" was dancing at CATCH ONE in the mid-80s in L.A. and hearing the exhilarating rush of "THAT'S THE WAY LOVE IS" booming over the loud speakers in the dark, eyes closed, hands in the air - now that's when house was a feeling...THIS "best of" compilation is a GREAT place to start, but I wish the re-isse had included some other amazing but often overlooked Ten City gems, like "SUPERFICIAL PEOPLE" (later remade by KENNY BOBIEN!) and the KERRI CHANDLER-produced track "THICK N THIN" to round out the package, but hey, I am a "completist" so this is minor quibbling...this CD is worth it's weight in GOLD, and a sad reminder that much of what passes for "dance/house music" these days is a largely joylous, soulless affair - at least what is played in most clubs, esp in LA - maybe I need to move to New York and go to THE SHELTER?! -

5.0 out of 5 stars Chicago style house, September 21, 2003
This review is from: Best Of Ten City (Audio CD)
I was born and raised on house music as a chicago native believe me Ten City set the standard as one of the first house acts to perform live. Ifd you like real house music from chicago from the 85-89 time frame then Ten City is the choice. Thats the way love is just happens to be one of the greatest songs ever written! Devotion is another classic this set should have had a couple of more songs but over all it's pretty hot. byron stingly should have stayed with this original group because his solo joints have been pure garbage! he got away from the deep dish chicago style and went techno and any real house fan hates techno. holla

THEY JUST DON'T MAKE HOUSE LIKE THIS ANYMORE-THIS ALBUM IS WHAT TRUE SOULFUL HOUSE IS ALL ABOUT-THE HOUSE FROM THE MID 80'S AND EARLY 90'S WHICH GOT ITS START FROM THE CLUBS IN CHICAGO-THE LEAD SINGER SOUNDS LIKE THE LEGENDARY SYLVESTER-THE BASS PLAYING IS THUMPING-AND I LOVE THE PIANO PLAYING TOO-MARSHALL JEFFERSON'S INFLUENCE ON TEN CITY'S MUSIC IS OBVIOUS-THEY NEED TO PUT OUT A NEW ALBUM-BECAUSE THE DANCE MUSIC TODAY CAN'T COMPARE-

5.0 out of 5 stars A SIMPLE TRIBUTE TO THE VERY BEST OF HOUSE MUSIC, December 3, 2001
This review is from: Best Of Ten City (Audio CD)
So here we come to a more than welcome tribute to possibly the best ever group in the whole history of house music. And as I'm sayin' house music, I mean the very best of it... Deep and soulful with a hudge aural emotion as you may feel from Byron Stingily's falsetto's voice. "Devotion", "That's The Way Love Is", "Only Will Tell", "My Peace Of Heaven et al being introduced to a new generation of music lovers... This sounds like Paradise, well ya know, the place where everything began... Frédéric Messent (Paris)

5.0 out of 5 stars classic house music of the late 80's and early 90's, April 6, 2002
By
gigi lau (Happy Valley, Hong Kong Hong Kong) - See all my reviews

Ten City has been one of the most recognized group in the history of house music. Byron Stingily is the vocalist with an extremely high voice, Herb Lawson is the guitarist and Byron Burke is the keyboardist. All of the songs in this cd are excellent including the best mixes by Marshall Jefferson, Steve "Silk" Hurley, and Timmy Regisford. If I were to name my favourite song it's got to be the extended version of "That's The Way Love Is" (underground mix by Timmy Regisford). This cd is a must for classic, deep house music fans!

Not the underground mix featured on this greatest hits, but the other one that was available on the "Foundation" cassette (i know i'm dating myself severely!) years ago....The cd is now out of print and goes for $30! Will check back here to find out! Thanks

this was part of intro to 80's chicago house.
i feel in love with this music when i first heard it!
Some of thr tracks seem a little dated but for me it still does the job.
From a house head..pick it up!
