Book Description

Best in Tent Camping August 18, 2009
As with all books in this series, the campgrounds selected for The Best in Tent Camping: Texas had to meet three criteria: they had to be accessible by car but not overrun with RVs; offer great scenery; and be as close as possible to a wilderness experience. Texas, with its extraordinary diversity of ecosystems, made author Wendel Withrow’s search an exciting one. Divided into the state’s major geographical areas, the book is based on the author's 30 years’ experience in following the back roads of Texas. Along with a detailed profile and useful at-a-glance information, clear maps show campground layout, individual sites, and key facilities. Driving directions supplemented with GPS-based coordinates for each campground entrance make getting there a snap. Regional maps and a profile numbering system make the book easy to use and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource, April 19, 2010
This review is from: The Best in Tent Camping: Texas: A Guide for Car Campers Who Hate RVs, Concrete Slabs, and Loud Portable Stereos (Paperback)
We have used this series of books for several states, including Texas. Despite the fact that we live in Texas, it's still helpful to know which parks are best for tent campers. We really hate traveling to a campground just to hear & smell some RV all night. The book is great to get an idea of what each park has to offer- wildlife, hiking, etc- and which campsites are best suited to privacy, view, etc, which is not always evident when you roll into camp after dark. We write our notes about each campground in the book, making it easy to find them and bring them along next time. It does have the same basic stats that are also found on the parks & wildlife website, but I don't usually have access to that while on the road.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good info, but info that's free on the Web, January 24, 2010

This review is from: The Best in Tent Camping: Texas: A Guide for Car Campers Who Hate RVs, Concrete Slabs, and Loud Portable Stereos (Paperback)
This book has a lot of info, maps, and reviews of campsites. Unfortunately, almost all of the info is freely available on the Texas Parks and Wildlife website. In addition, much of the material is repeated in the books Amazon offers in the "Frequently bought together" section of this item, so if you have one you have them all...even the photos are recycled.

So, if you find this book (or the others with the same materials) in the library, it's good info to have. But I wouldn't pay for it. Glad I did find it in the library before I bought it!

This review is from: The Best in Tent Camping: Texas: A Guide for Car Campers Who Hate RVs, Concrete Slabs, and Loud Portable Stereos (Paperback)
Great book. Most places reviewed are pretty main stream. I was hoping for more info on lesser known campgrounds. I like that the author was able to recommend specific sites in each park. I also like the suggested reading, voices from the campfire and the rating scale.
