Good information August 2, 2011
Format:Paperback
This is a handy informative guide to the top rated (by the author) tent camping sites in Michigan. Sites are rated on several criteria (Beauty, good for kids, fishing, hiking, swimming, canoeing/kayaking, cycling, and peace and quiet. Along with a comprehensive key information block, each listing has directions, a site map and a general interest blurb. Information is includes area history and local attractions. I found the information listed and author's ratings were accurate based on the places that familiar with. I enjoyed reading this book, the style of comments is light and entertaining. I am inspired to go camping and I am looking forward to exploring several new places.

The author includes several good check lists and some general information for novice campers or those not familiar with specific Michigan facts.

The index is good and it is easy to look up campgrounds by location or by the rated criteria. The key/symbols used by the author and the overall layout make this a very informative, easy to use reference book. Recommended for libraries and all camping/outdoor enthusiasts who want to explore Michigan's outdoors.

I am really glad that I purchased this book. My family and I tent camp several times during the Spring and Summer...and always in Michigan. I like the way the book is broken up into chapters according to certain categories - "Best for Hiking"...."Best for Swimming"...etc. My favorite is "Best for Peace and Quiet", because we've been having trouble with a lot of unnecesary noise while we're camping.

I've been to a number of the campgrounds recommended by Matt Forester in this book and have to agree with everything he says. I'm a lifelong Michigander and have been camping as long as I can remember. Most of my childhood experiences have been in the popular State Parks, however lately, I've been looking for the lesser known and quieter sites. The information in this book seems to fit that aim well. Much of the sites listed are of the rustic variety, or clearly best for tent campers.

Since I've been reading through his book, I've made a couple of reservations at some of the campgrounds he has recommended. Two are state parks, the other sites I'm looking at are National Forest campsites.

The descriptions are fairly detailed with most of the information needed to make educated decisions on where to camp. I'll update this review at the end of the camping season with a comparison of how his notes compare with my experience.

Happy Camping!
