PREFACE
This book provides an accurate, comprehensive representation of the SAT II: Subject Test in Spanish. It is composed of six complete practice tests based on the format of the most recently administered exam. We also provide an extensive - yet concise-review section that contains 17 drills.

Each of our practice tests is one hour in length and is patterned after the actual SAT II: Subject Test in Spanish. Each practice test covers every type of question that can be expected on the actual exam and provides an answer key and detailed explanations. Our intention is not only to provide the answers but also to explain to the student why the correct answer to a particular question is more acceptable than the other possible choices. Our unique format enables you to review effectively the material you will most likely encounter on the exam.

By studying our review, completing all six practice tests, and reading the explanations that follow, you can discover your strengths and weaknesses and thereby become well prepared for the SAT II: Subject Test in Spanish.

ABOUT THE TEST
The SAT II: Subject Test in Spanish is offered five times during the year: in October, December, January, May, and June. (The SAT II: Subject Test in Spanish with Listening, which this book does not cover, is administered only in November.) Students can obtain registration forms at the school guidance or counseling office.

Although some colleges require the SAT II: Subject Test as part of the admission process, most colleges use the SAT II: Subject Test score only for student placement purposes. The Spanish test consists of about 85 multiple-choice questions to be completed in one hour. The questions vary in level of difficulty and measure the gradual development of competence in the Spanish language acquired over a period of years. Although most students who take the test have studied the language for three or four years at the high school level, some students take the test at an earlier stage in their studies.

The SAT II: Spanish Test evaluates your reading skills through the topics of vocabulary, structure use, and comprehension of a variety of texts. The reading questions test vocabulary, but some questions test word meaning in certain sentence contexts. Various parts of speech are tested (verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc.), as well as idiomatic expressions. Structure questions require you to identify usage that is contextually and structurally correct. Reading comprehension questions (based on various pieces of prose fiction, newspaper articles, and advertisements) test the comprehension of main ideas, themes, and temporal settings.

The Spanish Subject Test is divided like this:
- Vocabulary and Structure / 33% of the test
- Paragraph Completion / 33% of the test
- Reading Comprehension / 33% of the test

There are no writing, listening, or speaking sections in this exam. These sections do appear, however, on the SAT II: Spanish Subject Test with Listening.

After struggling in spanish for three years, this book made a world of difference. The easy to follow lesson guides and the complete guides to spanish grammar, verb conjugation and vocabulary was great. My 770 made me very happy and I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to do well on the exam.

The tests with good, detailed explantions of the answers are the core of this book.

This book is much more sensibly organized than many Spanish textbooks. For instance, the irregular verbs are concisely organized according to spelling abnormalities which allows you to more quickly learn them. The more important aspects of grammar are nicely summarized with good to-the-point examples. The exercises are very good and zero in on the key points but also try to trick you with the finer points of grammar.

I usually don't like books that have dictionaries in the back because they waste space and every student has there own, better dictionary anyway. But the dictionary here is more like a vocabulary list. There is only a punchy one or two word definition in a narrow column which allows you to very quickly scan the list looking for words that you don't know to improve your vocabulary. So, I use the "dictionary" as a vocabulary builder and not as a regular dictionary.

My only complaint is that there is no index and the table of contents has no detail in it. So, for instance, if you wanted to find the section that contrasts por and para then you would have to thumb through looking for that section. Hopefully, the next edition will have an index and then it will merit 5 stars.

This book was an excellent resource when it came to preparing for the SAT II Spanish Exam. The easy-to-follow lessons were clear and concise for cramming instant information, and the exercises truly focused on the important details of the language. However, I found that the practice exams did not quite measure up to the difficulty of the exam itself. The grammar section of the exam was almost exactly the same as the exercises in the book, but the reading comprehension sections were much more challenging than those in the practice tests. Nevertheless, the book proved to be an excellent resource and study guide.
