Townes Van Zandt is one of America's best contemporary songwriters PERIOD. He really deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as other great 20th century songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, John Lennon & Paul Macartney, George Harrison, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and Gordon Lightfoot just to name a few. In my opinion, out of the 17 songs included on this album, 16 are truly classic. The only 'odd' one which I personally would never have picked is "Only Him or Me". Not that it's a bad song though. It' just that, ...I can't believe the compiler of this album decided to leave off other TVZ classics like "Marie", "Columbine","Snow Don't Fall", "Snowin' on Raton" and "Blaze's Blue" but I guess there's only so many songs you can fit on one disc and this is the only reason I didn't give this selection 5 stars.

If you are on a tight budget, I highly recommend this item. If you have a little more financial leeway, I recommend checking out a lot of his other stuff - especially his live recordings. The marvelous "Live at the Old Quarter" ranks in my Top Five Best Ever Live Albums and that's saying something because I have probably listened to hundreds!!!!
"Texas Troubadour" also offers an excellent and thorough overhaul of the TVZ canon, spanning most of his studio albums.
Also aesthetically speaking, could not have asked for a more breathtakingly beautiful cover to this album! Townes was a troubled individual but he had a beautiful soul. People, including myself, who have discovered myself have also discovered its power to heal. Highly recommended!
