5.0 out of 5 stars Logical extensions of Star Trek themes by thoughtful and intelligent people, January 29, 2009
This review is from: The Best of Trek # 2 (Star Trek) (Paperback)
A literal library of material has been written about the Star Trek phenomenon and this book is a collection of material that appeared in "Trek" a magazine for fans of the show. The material in this collection was written while the first feature movie "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" was in production. Therefore, the references are to the original series, the animated series and the first Star Trek books, with the emphasis on the adaptations written by James Blish.

Once again, there are some excellent articles expanding on the plots of the original series, reaching logical conclusions based on what is known. Some point out logical inconsistencies between episodes. My favorite article was "On Ship-to-Surface" Transportation" by Richard G. Van Treuren where he describes the immense technical problems with the transporter. It was "invented" by the show's creators in order to avoid having to land the ship but in terms of the technical complexity it is far beyond all of the other technical achievements used to make the show work.

A great deal of additional Star Trek history has been created since this material was written and collected, rendering some of it obsolete. Nevertheless, it is still very interesting to read the musings of some of the most thoughtful and intelligent people, fans of Star Trek.
