Book Description

May 1996
These 40 flies will catch trout anywhere you fish. Standard patterns readily found wherever good flies are sold, they account for probably close to 80% of the trout caught in North American waters. By combining them with the author's special ways of fishing, you too can learn to trick the trout and bask in the warm feelings of stream-side success.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Although this is just one man's opinion of the best all-around trout flies to carry in a single fly box (albeit a large one), the nymphs, dries, wets, and streamers covered here will be familiar to most North American fly-fishers. What list wouldn't have the gold ribbed hare's ear and pheasant tail nymphs, adams and elk hair caddis dries, and woolly bugger and muddler minnow streamers? There aren't many surprises here, but the usefulness of this slim, portable volume becomes clear after reading a few of the author's narrative descriptions. For each fly he offers situations and presentation methods that can shine new light on an already popular pattern, as well as reasons behind the fly's enduring success. Color plates of all 40 flies round out this helpful fly-fishing companion.

Review

These 40 flies will catch trout anywhere. Their effectiveness is testified too in that they are virtually all standard patterns. They have emerged as the very best from thousands of different fly patterns and types. Virtually all the flies listed are readily found wherever good flies are sold, and now with this guide you can make them yourself from the pattern recipes included! -- Midwest Book Review

4.0 out of 5 stars Key part missing in this nice pocket guide, February 18, 1998
This review is from: 40 Best Trout Flies (Paperback)
The details of how to use the patterns was very professional. I feel I could produce fish with every one of them. The mid-west review leads a person to beleive patterns are included. Only a shopping list is included for each fly. A novice tyer will need to spend some time finding directions for tying each fly. An extra 10 pages would have saved some of us a lot of work and made the book complete.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on how to fish the 40 Best Trout Flies, August 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 40 Best Trout Flies (Paperback)
This is an excellent book on how to fish the flies represented in this book. However, if you want to tye them you must have some background in fly tying to figure out how to tye them. Other than that it offers superb advice on how, when, where, and what size to fish. This is a great book but a fly tying background would help you more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great selection of flies---But how do you tye them., December 21, 1999
This review is from: 40 Best Trout Flies (Paperback)
I really like the book as I have about eight books on tying flies (only been tying for a month). This book is helpful, but it would be nice to have a color ---how to tye section in the back. Thanks--Dr. Jim, Ann Arbor, Mi.
