There is far more to Vangelis than his Academy Award winning, platinum, #1-charting 1981 album Chariots Of Fire and its #1 title song. Odyssey - The Definitive Collection (Hip-O Records), released November 4, 2003, celebrates his most famous and enduring recordings over 30 years, from 1973 to 2003, from his pioneering electronic music to the now classic "Chariots Of Fire" to a new ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Best of ~ Vangelis April 22, 2005
Format:Audio CD
This is an amazing 2002 compilation. I found it in the bargin bin in Loddekopinge at the local Maxi Ica. I was a bit suspicious since the prize was rediculousy low but I wanted to give it a try since Vangelis is a true master of electronic music. This compilation covers mainly his works from the 70's with one exception that being track number 9 which was released 1991. Vangelis work from the 70's is heavily influenced by the soft keyboard sound of the time and it sounds a bit like Jarré's work at the same time and a bit of a touch from Kraftwerk. Anyone that thinks that electronic is played by muisicans that could not handle "real" music will be in for a surprise as this kind of music is not for the novice but requires the same skills as for a classical piano player. Vangelis is truly an amazing artist, musician and composer. The book-let features a very nice photo of Vangelis playing and inside it has very to the point and well written story covering the artist and his music. This is a grand compilation for a very reasonable price.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "GEM" of a collection! May 23, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
While summarizing a career spanning over 40 years on one disc is a little pretentious, this is truly a gathering of quality pieces from Vangelis.

I own very few Vangelis recordings and wasn't going to go back and buy the whole library. I did give this disc a chance and was very pleasantly surprised. Each song stands on its own as a great composition. Some are highly energetic and others are soothing and relaxing. Either way, every one of the songs is great.

I highly recommend this as either an introduction to Vangelis' work or as a well-chosen select few from a great composer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking and Imaginative March 3, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Since Dogboy expressed his opinion, I will express mine. Vangelis' music is just as thought provoking, imaginative, and creative now as it was back in the 1970's when I began listening to it! Since Carl Sagan chose "Heaven & Hell" as his opening score for Cosmos, Vangelis obviously did many things right!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly the best tracks Vangelis recorded! February 2, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The sound quality may not be "wonderful", but it's much better than other collections I've seen around. Some of the classic albums are now available in new remastered editions with pristine sound quality.

Most tracks here are from "Spiral", "Heaven and hell" and "Albedo 0.39". If you're looking for a new better sounding CD issue of those tracks, perhaps you'd be best served with the new remastered editions of those three albums.

If you're getting to know this artist and are just looking for a single-CD collection with his best tracks to listen to and get to know him better, this cheap CD will probably do the trick for you. I still play it a lot, even though I do now own those three CDs I mentioned above.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true "best of" from Vangelis. January 2, 2014
By MikeG
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I've been a fan of Vangelis for 25 years, and I bought this one about a year ago. It contains some of his best work, no question about it. The opening song is typical, beautiful, intricate, mind-blowing music. Another song (track 12) is the well-known theme song from "Cosmos", the famous Karl Sagen series. In between are some great songs. In particular, one of my favorite is track 9, a piece featuring Jon Anderson (famously of YES) on vocals called "Shine For Me", an exquisitely lovely song. I highly recommend this CD.

2.0 out of 5 stars This is electric synthesizer not best of December 6, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Beware of the title "best of" because for many this is not! I love Vangelis' Oceanic. But, this "best of" is a compilation of electric synthesizer music that bears no resemblance to Vangelis' Oceanic. If you like electric synthesizer music, go for it. But, if you are looking for the Vangelis music you may have heard on New Age music cable channels, as I was, you will be very disappointed in this "best of". This should be re-titled.

5.0 out of 5 stars electric synthesizer music August 16, 2013

One of the most temperamental musicians of music and skilled with the gift of magnificence
he is worthy of respect and he is worthy of his legend
The movies he has scored are equally grand in representation as is his music accompaniment. .
