Editorial Reviews

Review

Another installation of Stardust Records wildly acclaimed Best Of The War Years series, this time featuring a true American visionary, Woody Guthrie!

Features 23 of Guthrie s beloved creations and recreations including Hey Lolly Lolly, Buffalo Skinners, Worried Man Blues, John Henry and many more!

With a renewed popular interest in bluegrass and folk music, this outstanding compilation is sure to be a hit!

All tracks have been digitally mastered and packaged with rare photos, extensive liner notes and a gorgeous slip case!

Woody Guthrie s role in the annals of American folk music receives top billing, yet his scope of influence is extraordinarily deep and includes such disparate genres as country, the recently resurgent, bluegrass, and the multiple splinter sounds of rock - punk, indie, and the coffeehouse sound of singer-songwriters. From the bluesy Going Down The Road to the classic Buffalo Skinners, Guthrie s songs are bona fide national treasures. Now, 23 of those beloved treasures are collected together on this very special compilation as part of Stardust Record s renowned Best Of The War Years series.

Originally the brainchild of Army Captain Bob Vincent as a means to boost morale of American troops during World War II, the story of the V-Disc program is a fascinating one. On a monthly basis, upwards of a quarter of a million vinyl records were shipped directly to our servicemen where they played in mess halls, barracks and even right on the front lines. For the musicians, who were in the midst of the musician s union strike, the program provided them a welcome opportunity to record again, which they gladly did free of charge. --Cleopatra Records
