Wayne Hancock "Thunderstorms and Neon Signs"

Since his stunning debut, Thunderstorms and Neon Signs in 1995, Wayne “The Train” Hancock has been the undisputed king of Juke Joint Swing--that alchemist’s dream of honky-tonk, western swing, blues, Texas rockabilly and big band. Always an anomaly among his country music peers, Wayne’s uncompromising interpretation of the music he loves is in fact what defines him: ... Read more in Amazon's Wayne Hancock Store

In my checkered past I've listened to electric Miles, all of Tom Waits, norteno, brazilian, tons of jazz, not as much blues as I should, and even acid jazz and public enemy. FOllowed the years of Weather Report, and collected lots of soundtracks. Dug Henry Mancini's Mr. Lucky goes Latin, TOuch of Evil scores, etc. But I've never put a CD in a car and just played it continuously without switching for days at a time. The Best of Wayne Hancock seems to be much better than any of his other CD's, because the quality of every song is superb. I should mention here that it took a while to realize how little drums are used in these selections, and you don't even notice. Everyone playing on this album is a star, and every time I hear these cuts I learn about what it takes to make a great recording. Whoever produced these cuts is a master in the studio, as each and every instrument is extremely well recorded and perfectly mixed. Wayne's voice is amazing, and he uses it like an instrument. Just try singing along to this stuff and see just how good he is. His guitar, bass and steel player are all fabulous, so much that after repeated listenings one looks forward to each solo that comes up. SOmetimes I think great pedal steel is better than sex. What a record. Even after six days in the player, I will still play some tunes more than once in a row. That's really saying something. Wayne has gone directly to my core mind with his sound and approach. I even bought a Gretsch Clipper guitar because of this album. Wish me luck.

4.0 out of 5 stars What the......????? April 12, 2006

I cant believe that this guy isn't a household name. While I'm a big fan of Traditional Country Music, I picked this one up on a whim. How would I describe Wayne Hancock??? Well, how about Hank Penny on Meth!!!! I haven't heard this much excitement (or true musical genius) in a long, long, time. Yes, the voice takes a little getting used to, but after hearing a few songs, you relaize that only that voice could truly deliver the sound coming out of your speakers. It's no wonder Hank III is copying Wayne's delivery. While Wayne is obviously the leader of this sound, his musicians deserve the highest praise; "Brand New Cadillac" is like a punch in the gut...simply amazing guitar and rhythm work. My favorites here are "That's What Daddy Wants', "Thunderstorms and Neon Signs", and "Life On the Road". While I dont think Wayne Hancock could (or should) stick to the true Honky Tonk sound that he presents so well, it is good to see the influences of Hank Williams mixed in with balls-to-the-wall swing. I dont know if the world could handle a Wayne Hancock and Brian Setzer collaboration, but that would be a blast. I give this one a B+. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wayne Hancock - Rockabilly May 9, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I had never heard of Wayne Hancock, until I purchased a CD of Hank Williams III. He talked highly of Wayne Hancock and recommended him on the insert inside his CD case. So, without ever hearing Wayne sing, I ordered this CD of him. He's amazing and every bit as good as Hank Williams III said. Another friend of mine heard this CD playing on my car's stereo and loved it immediately. Then they also ordered it for themselves. I'd highly recommend this CD.
