A Master Writer at the Top of His Form!, June 11, 2009
This review is from: The Best Western Stories of Les Savage, Jr. (The Western Writers Series) (Hardcover)
Though little known today, Les Savage is/was one of the best Western writers ever. His short stories and novels show a sensitive, gifted, imaginative wordsmith at work. Savage had a gift for creating living, breathing human beings who found themselves coping with unique situations and often in equally unique settings. Make no mistake about it, Savage was a master and it's our loss he died so young!
To judge how fine an author Savage was, start this book by reading the "Lunatic Patrol" story, the gripping account of a Mountie bringing in an insane murderer. Battling snowstorms and lack of sleep, the Mountie has to grapple with a prisoner who reverts back and forth from a pitiless, calculating murderer to a childlike innocent. The last sentences of the story will demonstrate why I rate Savage so highly; they'll throw you for a loop at the same time they touch your heart.
If you haven't sampled Savage's work, find a copy of THE BEST WESTERN STORIES OF LES SAVAGE JR. It will show you a rare talent at work. Highly recommended.
