An unexpected treasure.,

This review is from: Best Of: Where Do You Go to My Lovely (Audio CD)
The song, "Where Do You Go To, My Lovely" has been haunting me for about 30 years. I bought the CD willing to pay the price to get that one song. This CD is full of good stuff. "Letter to a Friend" hits close to home. ( A bulls eye, actually) though the exact circumstances may differ, we all have a close friend that we've treated unfairly. Of the two dozen or so tunes on the disc, there are none that I'll skip. I don't know why Peter Sarstedt isn't more widely known.

A nice compilation, but...,

This is a nice reasonable price compilation (poor booklet), but notice that
"where do you go to my lovely" is re-recording. But, if you also pick up "Singer and songwriter" collection (tracks are originals),I think you have 5star compilation.

Even for a young 21 year old, this music is very nostalgic.,

When i was 21, my bittersweet older boyfriend played me this record. Where do you go to my lovely...To this day, i am deeply moved whenever i hear this tune. So simple, so tender, so real. For those who have ever felt heartache, this song captures it beautifully. You'll struggle to recognize it, it sounds so familiar, so old but current, you'll swear you've heard it before, somewhere, another place, long ago. It's nostalgia at its best, perhaps a song that sings within the broken-hearted. Ironically my mum heard this song playing in my room, she recognized it. She remembered this tune playing in England when she was younger. For a moment, i think the generation gaps were silent, as we shared a romantic feeling of 'knowing'....this is one of the most romantic sad love songs of all times. The other songs are just as magical, but this one is in a class of its own. Like with hidden treasures, consider yourself lucky if you should happen to come across this song. Dance to this melody & fairy tales come to life, once again.

I thought there was only one version, but more recently I have heard a longer version. Which is hte official version? I think the shorter one is crisper, and the longer a bit meandering.

A True Lost Classic,
By A Customer
This review is from: Best Of: Where Do You Go to My Lovely (Audio CD)
I owned this album(pre-cd) when it first came out in the late 60's. Even then it was a thought provoking musical masterpiece. While many of my friends were listening only to Led Zeppelin, I would often have headphones on with this album playing. I have been searching, unsuccessfully for this in used stores for nearly thirty years. What a joy to find it availble again at last!

There is no better song writer than Peter Sarstedt. He is totally original and his albums are treasures. This set collects his first two albums. Buy it if you can.

The wankiest, most pretentious song ever written,

This review is from: Best Of: Where Do You Go to My Lovely (Audio CD)
Peter Sarstedt deserves the gong for writng "Where Do You Go To My Lovely", perhaps the most pretentious and smug song ever written - which have become fodder for ever-so-serious folk armed with guitars, dark glasses and John Denver hairstyles ever since!
Only the "let me take you by the hand, I'll lead you through the streets of London" rubbish comes close. When all is said and done, all a man has left to him is his sense of good taste. It is a pleasure to exclude Peter Sarstedt from one's CD collection accordingly. |
