Still Queen of the Keyboard,

This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
This is a remarkable recording by an entertainer who took Britain and the Commonwealth by storm with her brilliant playingin the 1950's. Talk to professional pianists and they will tell you that no-one can replicate Winifred Atwell's playing. It's very intricate (she was a classically trained virtuoso, the first woman to be awarded LRCM in Music from the London Academy) but immediately delightful on the ear. The bass effects she creates on her ragtime and boogie pieces have to be heard to be believed. Too bad there isn't accompanying video material of Winifred Atwellavailabe on this or other sites. She is still remembered fondly by people who saw her as one of the great entertainers of her time. If you like piano music you'll love this album.

I was only a young teenager in the 1950s - 60's and being from a musical family myself throughly enjoyed the playing of this great lady who has become a somewhat forgotton identity for her contribution to cleverly tickling the ivories on piano and providing an exceptional interpretation of wonderful songs to our benefit.
Her name only came to light recently to me, when I went through a box of old clocks purchased at an auction and discovered an item bearing her name, and authenticated as original. She came from Trinidad and played in concerts around the Gold Coast region of Queensland Australia and married into an indigenous family in Northern New South Wales - something I did'nt know of at the time - died there, and buried near the town of Lismore in that State. You learn something every day. I have contact, via publication of my find through a local newspaper there, with a couple of people who knew of her - and I now have this CD, a gem, which re-invigorates musical memories of her wonderful talents. Thank you Winnie.
