I admit that I only became familiar with Cynthia Rylant's writing the last couple of years after I had my daughter. She is now a first grader and loves both reading and writing, interests she inherited from me. Lately she has been expressing a keen interest in getting to know more about authors and what inspires them to write, so I have been looking up books that are written for children, about authors that write for children.

Best Wishes is an inspiring account about Ms. Rylant, a prolific writer for children and Young Adults. Ms. Rylant recounts her childhood growing up in a coal-mining family, in a town where there was no library or bookstore. Yet Ms. Rylant found something to read in the form of comic books, which she devoured voraciously. This early exposure to comic books, and her experiences in the coal-mining town, meeting neighbors, watching animals on country roads, all served to fuel her imagination and inspire her writing.

Ms. Rylant also mentions her own son, Nate who inspired the Henry and Mudge series of books, and her life in a small town in Ohio, her pet dogs and cats, and her quiet country life which suits her just fine. This is not only an inspiring story of a talented author, but one that rings so true and honest, and inspired both my daughter and I.
