It IS "the best", October 23, 2005
This review is from: The Best of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Audio CD)
When I first started gettng into classical music - Mozart, in particular - I had no idea of the multitude of various versions of his works that I'd have to choose from. So, when I started searching for CD's to buy, I was soon overwhelmed.
This CD was one of several that I chose in the end, since it had some pieces on it that I had heard of before. I couldn't have made a luckier choice out of all the options I had at my finger tips.
The versions of the pieces on this CD turned out, many years later, to truly be the best versions I will ever hear. Mozart performed by The Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields, conducted by Sir Neville Marriner, is in my opinion the finest out there.
My favorite peices by Mozart I found on this disc - "Concerto For Flute And Harp In C K 299: Andantino", and "Serenade In B Flat K 361: Gran Partita: Adagio" - the latter performed by The Netherlands Wind Ensemble. Both peices are so gorgeous, it is hard to believe they were written by a mortal.
These works by Mozart are beautiful. This CD, along with a few others, was one of the greatest introductions to Mozart that I could have hoped to find. I'm glad I heard these versions first. They became the standard by which I measured all subsequent searches for Mozart music.

Hey, it actually is the best!, March 31, 2000
This review is from: The Best of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Audio CD)
When I first saw this CD, I thought, "Hey, I've never heard most of this before! How can it be 'The Best Of'?" To put things simply, that was my own loss. Technically, this CD is brilliant; the playing is on a level so high it's difficult to find matches for it (I still haven't found a recording of the Finale of Mozart's 22nd Piano Concerto that I like more than this one, for example). The ASMF is brilliant as always, but... here's the thing... so is everyone else. The Netherlands Wind Ensemble, for example, plays the Adagio from the Gran Partita serenade... gasp... BETTER than the aforementioned ASMF on their release of it! Even the tiny Klavierstuck is played clearly and jauntily and with all the spirit we've come to associate with Mozart. All playing-quality issues aside, however, what pushes this album over the edge into greatness is the variety of its selections. This CD gives its listeners a view of the total range of Mozart's tonal expression, using the works that best demonstrate those various moods and styles of composition. It's a perfectly balanced musical experience, and as far as I'm concerned, everyone's Mozart collection should include this masterful CD.

I was basically introduced to most of this music during the soundtrack of the movie "Amadeus" and when I saw this CD, I felt it would probably have most of the songs I had heard during the movie. I particularly like "Concerto for flute, harp and orchestra" 3rd track. Listening to this thru my Grado headphones is sonic bliss. I would highly recommend this CD.
