Since 1991, Yulduz Usmanova is the most popular representative of Uzbek World Music. Originally discovered by Blue Flame Records, Yulduz has an immense amount of song material still available ­ reason enough to finally release a so­called "best of" CD.

The music from Yulduz is an outstanding fusion in the international pop music scene. The 34 year old graduate from the department for oriental music at the conservatory in Taschkent composes her songs on the basis of old folk songs still sung in Usbekian villages today. This traditional Usbekian folklore, that include Turkish, Persian and Central Asian influences, is being mixed with western Rock, Pop and Dancestyles. "When I started, I thought this traditional music has to be preserved", explains Yulduz, "although it had to be modernized."

Each composition is carried by traditional instruments ­ such as the Tambur (Central Asian long neck lute) or the Doira (original Usbekian percussion instrument), modern electronic and Yulduz's powerful, yet emotional voice. The result is an interesting synthesis, that show rhythmic, melodious songs and ballads. In Central Asia, Yulduz has advanced to a super star using this "Ethno­Crossover"­variation. In Europe music magazines and feature sections in newspapers highly praised Yulduz's first three CD's "Alma Alma" (1993), "Jannona" (1995) and "Binafscha" (1996) as special World Music "listening­pearls".

The album "the best of Yulduz" presents retrospectives of all three releases.

The best asian music I ever heard!!!!!!!!!!!!! This girl has amaizing vioce.

I was at the Borders bookstore in my own world, looking for a few books, when something just turned my world upside down. It was the background music being played in the music section of the bookstore. I requested the store to get me the CD and unfortunately they never had another copy. The song being played was Dunya Dunya...Yulduz has a gifted voice. The depth, the passion, the serenity, the calmness, the rise and fall, the vivaciousness, the vigor and the sadness at times can easily drive a peaceful person into the realm of complete tranquility and desire. In short, I was immensely moved by her album. I cannot point out one number from any of her albums. Each song brings a different mood as well as sentiment with it. It's a pure delight to listen to a young woman who holds in her so many different facets of life and is able to express all of them in such an effective and beautiful manner. I was thankful to God for making me run into her heavenly voice and songs. I would strongly recommend her CDs. Lastly, I must mention that a singer or an artist must be judged by their talent in that area and not by the choices they make and have made in life. It's unfair to judge them otherwise. The last reviewer's comments made me write my sentiments on this matter.

Usmanova has a very distinct and entrancing style. It is probably not like anything you have heard unless you are very involved with Middle Eastern music. It is more authentic than say, Alabina, and yet the complex rhythms and exciting vocals are entirely enjoyable to western ears. Highly recommended. Five camels!
