I live in the Las Vegas Desert with some of the worst water quality. My Vicks Humidifier is a must but the water causes the filer to build up with what is probably a colorful mixture of minerals. So far this is my analysis. It does seem to slow down the filter calcification that I used to scrape almost weekly. But that unnecessary pink dye makes this product to where you must handle it as if it were bleach. It stains everything including the machine its used in. I accidentally knocked the bottle over resulting in a hard time cleaning a difficult stain on my carpet and not much had spilled. Ill use this up but most likely will never buy it again because of the dye. Instead I'll search for another product with the same active ingredients but clear in color. The spill was my fault 100% but I can't imagine what's in there that made the color settle so quickly.

IT DOES A GOOD JOB REMOVING IRON AND CALCIUM FROM THE WATER ESP IF YOU HAVE HARD WATER. ONLY BAD THING IS THE PINK DYE STAINS YOUR TUB/GROUT DONT SPILL IT! AND YOU DONT NEED MUCH. ADD IT AFTER OTHERWISE IT FOAMS UP WHEN ADDING WATER.

I have used this product now for about three weeks in my wicking dehumidifier. It doesn't work well. I put in a capful per gallon, just as the instructions say. When it wasn't working, I added even more. No dice.

My wife said, "what's that smell. Like a rotten sock." It's the dehumidifier. A new, two month old dehumidifier. This BestAir stuff is expensive and simply not the best for treating the sitting water in devices that involve water reservoirs.

What does work? Bleach. I got a one dollar bottle of plain household bleach at a dollar store, and keep it in the cabinet underneath the utility room sink where I refill the bucket (and carry it to the dehumidifier). I put in a teensy amount of bleach... less than a capful for three gallons of water (I was adding three capfuls of BestAir!). Barely enough to smell it (not enough to make my dehumidifier smell like a swimming pool, not enough to degrade the wick in the machine), and--Voila!--smell completely gone. Instantly. The dehumidifier smells clean and new again. Slightly pool-watery, but only if I use too much. Honestly, the one dollar, gallon bottle of bleach will likely last me a year or more.

I;m very familiar with the detrimental effects of bleach on wicks,, cloth, even plastic, over time (swimming pool owner). The key is to use very little (a few drops) and to replace the wick in the machine every six months or so, regardless. It'll be keen. And I'm not "breathing bleach" anywhere near as much as someone doing laundry or swimming in a pool all summer. Again, add just so much that you can't even smell it. It takes, literally, drops.

Obviously, don;t spill bleach on the carpet. But, by same token, I wouldn't spill BestAir, either.

So, I found a better, vintage "mousetrap": household bleach.

Tried this for the first time and it does seem to help a lot. The water here is not terribly hard ,but the filter will calcify rather quickly in the winter. The use of this treatment has cut down the need to clean the filter with vinegar as often and extended the life of the filter.

I live in New York, where we're snooty about our water, but I was replacing humidifier wicks every few weeks, making my humidifier an expensive proposition. This stuff makes wicks come back from the dead! If the wick gets dry because the water is used up, I re-soak it, turn it upside-down, and use about a teaspoon per gallon each time I refill the water. The little meter goes from the red zone back into the OK zone.

This product works well and extends the life of the wicks, but the pink color is a problem. I have trouble with "Pink Mold," (which is actually Staph bacteria that can cause respiratory infections). I add treatment to prevent the pink mold, but with the pink color staining the wicks it looks very much like the pink mold which would grow without the treatment! As others have stated the pink color can also be difficult to remove if you spill even a drop of it (I have white counter tops which really show the color). I don't know if the pink is an added dye or an active ingredient, but other colorless products seem to work just as well.
