Book Description

For more than a decade, BESTFEEDING has been recognized by midwives, doctors, and nursing mothers as the definitive word on breastfeeding. The culmination of 60-plus years of hands-on experience from three dedicated and internationally respected authors, this newly updated classic blends academic knowledge, clinical expertise, and practical skills to educate first-time and experienced mothers alike. Mothers will find precisely the information they need to help their babies grow and thrive—physically and emotionally—as a result of breastfeeding. The book answers all questions a new mother may have, and it is fully illustrated with dozens of helpful photos and drawings that demonstrate all the dos and don’ts of breastfeeding. In addition to the basics, mothers will find tried-and-true solutions to both common and more unusual problems, as well as remedies for babies with special needs. With its sensitive and informed advice, BESTFEEDING is a supportive reminder of what women have always known: that breastfeeding is, quite simply, the best way to nourish a baby.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE book I recommend as an educator & doula May 21, 1999
By Suzanne
This book is wonderful because it doesn't just tell you how to breastfeed, it SHOWS you! More pictures, and better pictures, than any other breastfeeding book I've seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book was a lifesaver when I had my first child September 22, 1999

For anyone who is expecting a child, this is the best resource I've found for information on breastfeeding. Every problem I experienced was covered here, with lots of reassurance and encouragement to keep me going during those night feedings!

5.0 out of 5 stars great for the 1st time mom March 8, 2002
I knew that I was going to breastfeed my 1st baby, no matter what anyone told me, and my midwife recommended this book to me. I think I read it 3 times in total. it is absolutely excellent, the author reviews key points throughout, so when you are done, you have a very firm grasp on how to be successful at breastfeeding, as well as giving lots of troubleshooting ideas. The pictures are excellent. Overall an A+ !!

A friend and veteran mama gave this book to me shortly before my daughter was born. It is a concise but just detailed enough guide to breastfeeding. What sets this book apart from other books on the subject is that it is full of pictures and diagrams that make the mechanics of breastfeeding much easier to grasp. Moreover, it offers multicultural perspectives on breastfeeding that, I imagine, make this book more accessible to moms from a range of racial/ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Like so many moms and newborns, my girl and I got off to a rocky start...agonizing engorgement, cracked and bleeding get the idea. The photographs and illustrations in this book helped me notice and correct my daughter's improper latch.

As a final word, no book can solve serious breastfeeding problems. It is best to meet with a lactation consultant if you are having difficulty, and use books like Bestfeeding for smaller problems along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars fewer words, more pictures, more information November 6, 1998
Excellent! Shows a new breastfeeding mother how to position a newborn properly. Many books do a better job of explaining subjects like why breastfeed, weening, and introducing solids (like the LaLeche Bible (oops I mean manual)), but this book has pictures of how to position that little one. Breastfeeding is natural, but there are some things to do right to make the experience positive and to increase the chance of a longer nursing relationship. This book will get you, baby (and dad) off to a great start.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best how-to books on breastfeeding December 18, 1997
Bestfeeding is an excellent book for new mothers wanting to breastfeed. Besides covering breastfeeding "basics", Bestfeeding also deals with many of the difficulties than can arise. Perhaps its best feature are the clear pictures depicting both good and the less-than-perfect positionings of babies on the breast--very helpful for the inexperienced breastfeeding mom. Most other books only give line drawings of a proper attachment. This book shows the reader examples of poor positioning and then explains what is wrong with the picture. If a new mother is going to buy one book on breastfeeding before she has her baby, this is the one I recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, fabulous! December 17, 1997
By A Customer
This book was my lifesaver. I consulted this book when I had problems after my son was born, and found the answers I needed. I devoured it before my son was born, and this, along with detailed advice from a lactation consultant(who was thrilled I had bought this book) and the nurses in the maternity ward was what I needed to get me on the right start. My son was exclusively breastfed for five months and still nurses happily at sixteen months. This is a wonderful reference for the breastfeeding family.

5.0 out of 5 stars I researched them all - this one's THE BEST March 10, 2008
I felt so overwhelmed when my son was born, that I checked out all the recommended books on breastfeeding provided by the hospital (15 of them). This one was the best: it was clear, it was helpful, and it provided truly useful advice. The pictures & photos with the right & wrong way to do things are awesome. Helped me have confidence!
