Product Description

BASED ON A TRUE STORY. In 1994 Misha Defonseca joined up with tiny Mt Ivy Press to produce a book about her childhood experiences during the Holocaust. A Jewish war orphan who lost her identity when her parents were arrested by the Nazis, she set out on foot at age 7 to find them, walking 3,000 across war-torn Europe and hiding in the forest where she was befriended by wolves. The book was just hitting its stride, attracting interest from Disney Studios and Oprah Winfrey, when suddenly Defonseca turned against her publisher, Jane Daniel, and filed a lawsuit. Claiming that the publisher had not done enough to promote the book, she won a $33 million judgment, one of the largest in Massachusetts history. Ten years and thirteen additional lawsuits later, Daniel was wiped out financially and emotionally. In the interim, Defonseca's book had become a bestseller in eighteen countries and a feature film. Then Daniel, by accident, stumbled across documents suggesting that Defonseca was not who she claimed to be. Daniel's only remaining asset was the story about the case that she had been writing in her head through the whole ordeal. She began posting chapters, as she completed them, on a blog, not knowing what to expect. "This book is being written in real time," she wrote. "I do not know how it will end." What happened next is miraculous ‹ a truth-is-stranger-than-fiction detective story: Daniel was contacted by a forensic genealogist who came across the blog and thought she could crack the case. With no name, date or place of birth to go on it seemed an impossible mission. But truth has a mysterious way of seeking the light. After 20 years of deceiving millions of people, Defonseca, at last, was confronted with her real identity: the daughter of a Nazi collaborator from a Catholic family. Defonseca confessed that her memoire was a hoax. This is a story of the wildcat world of independent publishing, the horrors of the legal system, and most of all, a personal battle for survival against staggering odds.

5.0 out of 5 stars How do they sleep at night?, March 18, 2009
By Louise (Australia) - See all my reviews
I purchased and read this well-written book. The Defensecas, Lee and the entourage of lawyers with their snouts in the trough may once have had consciences - albeit flimsy ones turned by their greed - but their ruthelessenss is just horrifying.

I am not one to rub salt into wounds, and I am sure that Jane wishes she'd listened to the professors who told her it was contrived malarkey but I found myself feeling some frustration at what was accepted as evidence. Still, it fooled even key players in the Holocaust survivor/historian community as well as Oprah so Jane cannot entirely be blamed.

Misha Defonseca - or should that be Monique Dewael - disgusts me beyond belief in her effort to blame the publisher for her lies, and for using the very real suffering of others for her own gain. And she doesn't even seem embarrassed by it! That she can still hold her head up and make demands for money off the back of these lies is a testament to I don't know what kind of personality disorder, but a severe and bizarre one, one would think. No sympathy for her. Would have loved to have seen the howling with the wolves gig; hysterical. This disgusting sociopath is a leech.

Good luck, Jane - I do hope the truth will out and end this nightmare.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a Bizarre Story - but Stranger than Fiction, November 13, 2008
As the forensic genealogist who assembled the team that made it possible to expose Misha Defonseca's Holocaust identity fraud, we actually had a small role to play in this book.

When we leveraged an international team, methodology and recent technology in a few short weeks - tipping the scales towards truth with our acumen and resources, other forces were needed to let the truth bomb explode.

Some were waiting. Childhood friends who knew the truth were cast aside for more than a decade in Europe. Finally the French surgeon Serge Aroles contacted Belgian Holocaust historian Maxime Steinberg. Misha's real identity was revealed. Misha denied it. Belgian investigative reporter Marc Metdepenningen responded with a genuine interest in finding her real family - only to support and expand our research.

Yet, the people who actually lived through the years of the Misha Money Machine development had no idea of what was really happening. They are are the key players in this book, scrambling to make sense out of nonsense.

Author Jane Daniel is one of them, and the narrator of this story. Only now does Daniel see in hindsight what was really going on. That Defosneca manipulation skill in itself is scary, but the legal system that has refused to address Misha Defonseca's fraud is even scarier.

Does the truth matter or does unsubstantiated opinion reign in the modern legal world?

That question still remains to be answered.

This book is an indictment of a legal system that does not test the evidence. Evidence languishing and ignored.

You can read this book, know that Misha Defonseca will be shown to be a Holocaust memoir fraud, and still be amazed that the obvious message "she lied, she lied, she lied" is discarded by the legal system on every level. Misha's need to keep the original memoir out of play - in favor of the French Editions Robert Laffont, removing the tell tale real names and photographs, and is discarded.

There is a bizarre tale of twists and turns in the coverup, and an even more bizarre response to the exposure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Author's horrifying journey into hell, via the (in)justice system, January 28, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Like the other readers, I simply could not put this book down until I finished it. What Jane Daniel has had to endure at the hands of a malignant narcissist/sociopathic couple, and then at the hands of a cynical, truly evil legal system, is devastating to read. The Lithuanian Holocaust survivor who reached out to Jane, with compassion, for Jane's suffering came closest to the truth: suffering is suffering, no matter the etiology.

To the author: my wish for you is that "Bestseller" BECOMES a bestseller! As my 3-year-old daughter used to say, each time she had to undergo another surgery or medical crisis,crisis/surgery "Never give up, Mama. NEVER!"

I'll be eagerly awaiting news of you winning your appeal!
GOOD LUCK!!!
