Book Description

September 1, 2005
The Beswick Animals: A Charlton Standard Catalogue was released September 1st, 2005, just one year after the release of the 7th edition. This underlines the collectors demand for information on the animals produced by the John Beswick Studio, which was situated in Longton, Staffordshire, England. Written by four experts in the field, Marilyn and Peter Sweet on horses and dogs, and Diana and John Callow on birds, cats, farm animals, fish, et.al., this guide is the most informative on the market today. Readers will discover over 700 illustrations complete with model number, designer, size, colour, dates of manufacture and varieties, plus a handy cross-referencing index in this easy-to-use guide. Recent discoveries have been added to bring this catalogue up-to-date. This book is a must for every Beswick collector.

One of the more interesting discoveries is H260 Hunter, with the tail attached, vs. the more common ‘tail not attached? which contrary to this catalogue, is the scarcer of the two models.

Several models which were thought to be quite rare have surfaced in auctions. Model 1541 Cat - seated, in dark pewter was recently sold for £1,000, model 2238 Owl, by Harry Sales, sold for £300 and model 1501 Huntsman in rocking horse grey recently sold for a staggering £4,950, in excess of our £2,000 catalogue price.

Beswick cattle are also bringing record prices, particularly the "Red Frieisan?colourway, model 1362A Red Friesian Cow sold for £1,000, model 1439A Red Friesian Bull sold for £1,500, and model 1249C Red Friesian Calf sold for £800.

The 8th edition of Beswick Animals is available from dealers, bookstores, collectable stores, and internet bookstores, such as Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com. Beswick Animals is also available from the publisher at the cover price, plus postage.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Guide, February 5, 2010

Beswick collectors shouldn't be without this great guide, but take it as just that.... and you might like to hang on to your previous editions as each Edition varies the Beswick items shown in it's colour plates! Don't base your purchasing prices too heavily on it - as the market ebbs and flows. There are some items I've NEVER seen at auctions nor on eBay etc over the past decade, yet in this guide they are listed at quite low value. I wish! I'd love future editions to include more about the designers, photos of the manufacturing process and the (now demolished)factory.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beswick Animals, Eighth Edition: A Charlton Standard Catalogue, February 14, 2006
This review is from: Beswick Animals, Eighth Edition: A Charlton Standard Catalogue (Paperback)
This over all is a good reference price cataloque, but it is missing some dog items that were in the Millennium edition. I don't know how many other items are also missing. This was a disapointment to me as I really don't care to have to buy another book to get the current value of the items not in this book. I figure for the price it should cover all of them.
