Terrific Southern and Summer Read!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Bet Your Bottom Dollar: A Bottom Dollar Girls Novel (Hardcover)
I received Bet Your Bottom Dollar as an ARC a few weeks ago and I absolutely LOVED it. In three days, I have read over 200 pages which is a record for me with a new house and a baby on the way! The characters are just terrific and I love the sayings at the beginnings of each chapter, especially the bumper stickers and the church ones.Timothy is a fantastic character and I love how he finally came around to tell Elizabeth how he feels after a little prodding! It does remind me of a bit of Fried Green Tomatoes (the comparison I had read somewhere) but also reminds me of Big Stone Gap books (by Adriana Trigiani)--I love those as well! I even wrote to the author and I am really pleased to know she already has 2 more books like these in the pipeline. She seemed quite appreciative that people were reading her books and I can't wait till the sequel comes out! Lorraine

Perfect for summer!,

Like the other reviewers, I got an advanced copy of this novel ~~ and just loved it! This is a sassy and fun reading ~~ where the heroine grows into herself and finds out that one can make lemonade out of lemons! You have Elizabeth, who was raised by MeeMaw after her mother died. She was born in a small community outside of Augusta, Georgia. She is the manager of a small dollar-type store that is being threatened by a big superstore coming to the area. Gathering her resources, Elizabeth convinces her friends and family to fight the superstore. And along the way, Elizabeth finds true love and the deep secret of her past. This is a fun, witty novel about friendship, family, and love. It's a great read ~~ the quotes at the beginning of each chapter is fun and the writing flows like a conversation between friends. So if I were you, I'd grab a glass of iced tea and this book ~~ go sit somewhere outside and enjoy this funny story. It's a perfect read for summer! 7-6-04

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the author's phrasing. I really felt like I was "in" Cayboo Creek. I really liked Elizabeth - I could really empathize with her. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Delightful!!,

This is a delightful, charming first novel. The characters are well developed; the reader feels as though he lives in their town. Reminiscent of Fried Green Tomatoes. The "Hee Haw" reviewer sounds like sour grapes ... or hardened grits. Your heart will open to the Bottom Dollar folks and you'll anxiously await the second in the series!!

What a charming book. The characters are very funny especially Atalee. This book reminds me of The Miss Julia series. It was gentle, entertaining fiction with no bad language. I'm recommending it to my book club.

Welcome to Cayboo Creek, South Carolina. I would like you to take a little bit of time and meet the woman that run The Bottom Dollar Emporium because I am sure you are going to love them. Elizabeth, the beauty school drop out with a head for business, Attalee, a women well into her 80's yet shows no signs of slowing down, and Mavis, who after being its clerk for 15 years is now the new owner. These three woman, along with the town, just found out that the Super Saver Dollar Store is about to open in the vacant lot on the outskirts of Cayboo Creek. That could only mean trouble for the Emporium and the towns other small businesses so they all come together to brain storm about how they can save The Bottom Dollar and the town. This is one of the cutest southern fiction books I have read in a long time and am extremely surprised it is not getting more attention than it is. The writing flowed and was very simple to read with short chapters that had great little titles such as "If your not the lead dog, your scenery never changes". It also had a wonderful cast of town folks who were endearing and lovable. My favorite though had to be Attalee. She was a real spit fire with a mouth and attitude to back it up. Bet Your Bottom Dollar is the first book by Karin Gillispie, and I sure hope it is not her last. I would love the opportunity to revisit Cayboo Creek someday to find out what the town has been up to since I last left them.

A delightful romp!,

A light-hearted comedy about small towns that is wholesome enough to give to your grandmother, but funny enough for you to enjoy. With a montley crew of friends and townsfolk Elizabeth vies to save a locally owned store from corporate competition, while trying to rebuild her personal life after her fiance cruely lets her know their engagement is off by leaving a note on the windshield of her car. If you like Miss Julia, Mitford, you'll love the Bottom Dollar girls. Fast pacing and strong humor make Bet Your Bottom Dollar a great summer read!

What a Hoot!,

I laughed out loud several times while reading this hilarious book. Elizabeth Polk has just gotten the heave-ho from her fiance Clip, and if that wasn't bad enough her job at the Bottom Dollar Emprium is threatened. Cute characters like the uppity Mrs. Tobias (who always wears driving gloves) and 80-something Attalee help her through her troubles. A romance with a Buddhist and some family secrets keep the pages flying. I love the little sayings that begin each chapter. This author obviously knows and loves the South with all its sweet quirks.

An extremely well written and entertaining tale with charming and likable characters. It makes you smile and laugh and invokes memories of similar characters we have all known. I know many of us will be wondering what will be happening in the next of the series. A super start for a novice author.

A cut above your standard Southern fiction,

This review is from: Bet Your Bottom Dollar: A Bottom Dollar Girls Novel (Hardcover)
I grew up in the South and so I read a lot of Southern fiction and in terms of local color, hilarious characters, genuine charm and just plain likability, this book stands apart. Plus, the writing is excellent. You won't want to put this book down. The plotting is fast paced and creative, and you'll love the characters and want to find out what happens to them. I was excited to find out from one of the reviews below that two more are in the works--can't wait to find out what happens next in the Bottom Dollar world.
