Surprise, surprise!,
By Charles S (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beta Male Fairytales (Audio CD)
This, to me at any rate, unknown band, have produced one of the most sensitive, articulate and musical efforts of 2007. It turns out that the band have been plying their trade around the Portobello road area for some time, and have put this experience to good use. Most of the tracks suggest strife, doubt and identity crisis - but are beautifully crafted, and the music lightens the darkness, sadness and confusion that the lyrics suggest.
Hardly a weak effort on the CD - stand outs are the infectious Rise, the thoughtful Let Me Out, the reflective Carry On, and the moody, soulful Bad Dream. But the beautifully sung love song Time is perhaps the defining track. What doesn't quite work? Well, perhaps Find Me An Angel has a little bit too much of the "bedsit whine", and Harmonica in F, while catchy, seems a little pointless. Other than that no complaints at all. It feels as if the tracks were a long time in the making - it will take a strong effort to produce something as good as this.

My latest obsession,
By Divemaster "Divemaster" (Washington) - See all my reviews

I bought this CD after listening to the band live in Seattle with A Fine Frenzy (Another great band). What an amazing voice Jamie has. He is very personable and passionate about his music and songwriting. I have to say, he is quite amazing live and his voice sounds like a mix between Rod Stewart and Bryan Adams. Unique, gritty but very addicting to listen to.
Based out of London, Ben's Brother is destined for success. Check out their site [...] for videos and interviews. Just don't forget to buy their CD first - you won't be disapointed. This CD is definately my latest obsession. Love it!

Wow! Hats off to Jamie Hartmen (and his group) for following his dream to fruition. Wonderfully written lyrics, vocals and a truly inspiring artist to be watched over the coming years. Truly not to be missed! An artist that hopefully will be with us for years to come. Amazing!

This is a fantastic album by a terrific band! I can play this repeatedly and never tire of it. I can't wait to hear more from Bens Brother and hopefully it won't be so hard to find them or hear them over here! You won't be disappointed with this one!

This is great stuff that will only get better with age!
I know this is an import but it's a little disappointing to only see one other review 6 months after the release? I had expected to see at least 20 or more of mostly great reviews.

One of the best albums of the year so far,

A great new British band with a really good first album. Lead singer sounds a little like a young Rod Stewart. Very accessable AOR music. The best album I've heard so far this year.

Wow!,

When I heard Kiss Me Again in the Dentyne commercial I had to buy their disc. While a couple of the songs aren't quite as good as the others even those are so good. The best ones are great. The lyrics have feeling and meaning unlike a lot of music on the market. Their sound is different but in a really enjoyable way. I can't wait to be able to buy another album.

Went to download "Stuttering", played a couple of others tunes, bought the CD on the spot. Creative, entertaining, and thought provoking combinations of music and lyrics. A small aside: does anyone else hear a Macy Gray flavor in the rasp and style of the lead singer? Only this CD is no one hit wonder - very song is a winner.
