Leon Castner is the Senior Partner of National Appraisal Consultants. He has been an appraiser for over 35 years and was the first auctioneer to ever receive the CAPP (Certified Appraiser of Personal Property) from ISA (International Society of Appraisers). His CAPP was awarded through ISA/Indiana University and he is also a Certified member of the Appraiser's Association of America
Mr. Castner holds a B.A. from Gordon College (1970), and an M.T.S. from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (1972). His resume includes being an adjunct professor at Centenary College (Hackettstown, NJ) and the University of Washington (Seattle). He has taught at many adult and community schools on antiques and collectibles and was the co-presenter of Appraising the Appraisal- a professional development seminar for the NJ Insurance industry.
Leon served as chairperson of The Foundation for Appraisal Education and is currently the Director of Education for ISA, as well as chief instructor for all the core, re-qualification, and advanced level courses. He serves as a member of The Appraisal Foundation Advisory Council for ISA.
Leon owned a very successful auction gallery in New Jersey for many years. He has worked with the RTC, FDIC, US Marshall's Office, Attorney General, FBI, US District Attorney, TASA, and has provided major appraisals for these organizations. He was the editor of Collector's Compass, a series of books on antiques & collectibles and is the co-author of Betcha' Didn't Know That, a book about antique trivia and facts. He co-hosts a weekly nationally syndicated public radio show called Value This with Brian and Leon.
Leon has been an ISA member almost since its inception in Chicago in the late 1970's and has served on the board of directors as well as head of almost every committee. His talents are many and varied, as indicated by his bio, but includes the fact that he is an ordained Orthodox Priest, a father of seven children and fifteen grandchildren (at last count), and a man with more wit than hair (to misquote Shakespeare).
