THE BETHESDA SYSTEM FOR REPORTING CERVICAL/VAGINAL CYTOLOGIC DIAGNOSES was developed at a National Cancer Institute sponsored workshop in December 1988 to provide uniform diagnostic terminology that would facilitate communication between the laboratory and the clinician. The format of The Bethesda System report includes a descriptive diagnosis and an evaluation of specimen adequacy. The Bethesda System we designed to be flexible in order that it could evolve in response to changing needs in cervical cancer screening as well as to advances in the field of cervical pathology. Subsequently, a second workshop was held in April 1991 to evaluate the impact of The Bethesda System in actual practice and to amend and modify it where needed. One of the major recommendations of this second meeting was that precise criteria should be formulated for both the diagnositic terms and for the descriptors of specimen adequacy. That is the intended purpose of this report.

The Bethesda System for Reporting Cervical/Vaginal Cytologic Diagnoses has greatly simplified and standardized the nomenclature for reporting the spectrum of pathologic as well as non-pathologic conditions of the cervix and vagina. The pictures are helpful, although it would have helped more if there are more than one picture for every condition to show the spectrum of any said condition. This would help guide the cytotechnologists/cytopathologists in naming, reporting the condition. What is exemplary in the system is its integration of the reporting of the adequacy of the specimen. This has a lot of impact in the clinical corelation as well as alerting the physicians of the possible limitations of the diagnosis. All in all, it is a well made system.

Much used and needed book if you are going into the cytology field. Clear, concise, in a 1lb book, what more can students ask for?

This small handbook is a great start for a new cytotech to have closeby. Affordable,concise in text with classic cytology examples in clear photographs. A great basic companion.
