Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book can renew your hope and restore your zeal for the Almighty. If you are presently on your own 'Bethlehem Road,' read this book with a towel nearby--you'll need it to absorb your tears of joy and discovery."
Dale Jenkins, The Jenkins Institute

"In Bethlehem Road, Michael Whitworth masterfully weaves together the spiritual and pragmatic implications of the story of Ruth and Naomi. He takes us behind the curtain to see the historical and cultural context in which this age-old story unfolds. He brings together a wide array of scholarship and adds his own unique insights as he explores the story's various details. Most important, he makes sure we don't miss the connection between this ancient story and our modern lives."
—Paul O'Rear, Author of Living With a Broken Heart

"As in his other books, Michael's thorough research and keen insights are most rewarding to the reader. The Talking Points at the end of each chapter are thought-provoking, and the lasting lessons of permanent value he draws from the biblical text are long to be remembered by those who read and profit from this book."
—Dr. Jay Lockhart, Author of The Glory of Preaching

"There are several things I like about this book: the author has read widely on the text of Ruth, thought deeply about the narrative, and creatively applied its principles to our modern situation. There are difficulties in Ruth, and Whitworth's book does not hide them, or even always try to explain them. There are also difficulties in life, and Whitworth handles them honestly, without trying to sugarcoat our relationship to God, including, sometimes, our doubts. This book will prove useful in Bible classes and personal study." —Dr. Ed Gallagher, Heritage Christian University

"Bethlehem Road is a delightful study of the Book of Ruth, which draws the reader into seeing just how practical and valuable the examples of biblical characters can be. Michael Whitworth has artfully infused a new practically for the 21st-century Christian. It is a must-read for anyone making choices and living through the consequences or blessings of those choices." —Dr. Randall Bailey, Faulkner University

I received this book from BookCrash for review.

This is a nice study of the Book of Ruth for any student of the age of understanding up through aged. The author, as with his other study books, presents the material in such a way with historical facts to help the reader understand the life of those who lived during those eras. The student who reads this book should be able to apply the lessons to their own life. The book is a map itself to guide the reader through the Book of Ruth.

Bethlehem Road is easy to read and is a very insightful look into the lives of Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz. It is a good supplement for personal or Bible group study of the Book of Ruth and walks through in segments advancing through the Book each building upon the last.

The layout is good without being overwhelming and allows the reader to take “breaks” before advancing to the next section. It is fundamentally challenging to take the presented information and apply it to one’s personal spiritual life.

I would indeed recommend this book to anyone who cares to increase their understanding and knowledge of God and how He works, not just in those of our ancestors, but in the lives of everyone historically and in the days we live. Teenagers up to the eldest studious Bible reader will enjoy Bethlehem Road.

"God's redemption. That's what this story is really all about. Sure, there are the very human elements of struggle, sacrifice, love, friendship, and faithfulness. Yes, the romantic component is epic, inspiring the music of countless weddings. It's undeniable that tragedy and heartache play major roles in the story's develpoment and the direction of the main characters' lives.
But at the final curtain call, it is God's faithfulness that takes the bow. Only God is big enough to restore hope in the midst of utter despair. Only he can redeem the mourner's grief and grow something beautiful out of the dark soil of emotional and spiritual destitution. Only God can work all things together - even the bad things, even the darkest of days - to produce something good (Rom 8:28)." - Paul O'Rear (from the Forward to Bethlehem Road)

I don't usually start my book reviews with a quote from the book. I want to make sure my readers know that I am actually reading these books and reviewing them - not just grabbing a quote and moving on to the next title. But in this case, I thought this quote did an amazing job of describing this particular book. I've always been intrigued by the story of Ruth. After all, its on of only 2 biblical books named after a female. And the story is very compelling. Two women, scarred by tragic loss and heartache, bound together by devotion. There's also the love story element - a kind, wealthy man swoops in and marries Ruth, saving her AND Naomi! Its like a Jane Austen novel! But more than anything, the book of Ruth is the story of God's provision, His faithfulness to those who seek Him, and His ability to take the worst tragedies in our lives and turn them into beautiful portraits of His grace and glory.

Bethlehem Road is a journey through the book of Ruth and looks at the cultural nuances disrupted when a Moabite joins lives with an Israelite.
Michael Whitworth is a preacher and the author of The Epic of God and The Derision of Heaven. He regularly blogs at Start2Finish.org.
The book promises to comfort others who have walked the road of suffering and to strengthen faith in the providence of God. While that was a tall order, it fulfilled the task by showing how God's hand worked with the initiative of His people to bring events around for their good and His glory.
An interesting theory was raised in the idea that Ruth parallels the Proverbs 31 woman. I find that thought exciting, because I can relate to Ruth more than the other gal. But, if written about David's great grandmother, then the book of Ruth would be a likely target for the woman exalted in Solomon's annuls.
Although most people don't pick up a commentary for their reading pleasure, Bethlehem Road reads more like a conversation and shows the relevancy to current events. It brings hope to a world in bleak circumstances.
One of the things that gave me pause was the assertion that Ruth's actions were more memorable than Abraham's leap of faith, because she didn't receive a call from God like Abraham did. Abraham followed God because of his relationship with God. Ruth followed God because of her relationship with Naomi, and that is a beautiful reminder of the responsibility we all have to lead others to the Lord, as we are in relationship with them.
I also appreciated the affirmation that we all need someone who will be faithful to us when we go through the storms of life.
