Book Description

April 2002
New Bethlehem, Indiana is about to collide with San Francisco, California.

Naomi Bittner, returning to her roots in the Midwest, is unhappy that Ruth Greene, lesbian partner of her daughter, Marina, has insisted on accompanying her. Both women are mourning Marina. Neither woman understands why Marina has fled them both.

As Naomi tries to reconnect the threads of a life she left years ago, hip young San Franciscan Ruth wends her way cautiously through the intricate interconnections of small town life, its assumptions and rigid standards of behavior. Slowly, she uncovers secrets, and closets.

One of those closets is occupied by the highly admired town doctor, Belinda Boaz. An attraction building between Belinda and Ruth seems to have a hopeless future: Belinda is a generation removed from Ruth in age, has a daughter and a grandchild, and is deeply entrenched in a town seemingly unwilling to make room for a lesbian couple.

Then, suddenly, shockingly, events careen out of control in the town of New Bethlehem...

Crowe clothes the journey of these women in an ancient story--the biblical tale of Ruth--whose themes of friendship, perseverance, and welcoming the stranger have powerful echoes for our contemporary world.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Why has Marina Bittner fled the two women who love her so? Neither her mother, Naomi, nor her ex-lover, Ruth Greene, can wander far from that question as they drive uneasily from San Francisco to Naomi's heartland hometown, New Bethlehem, Indiana. Small-town life has its share of obstacles and land mines as Naomi tries to make a new life in an old space, and young, hip San Francisco teacher Ruth deals with the stares her multiple pierced head produces. A sermon at the Presbyterian church suddenly engages the young woman's "gaydar," and she sees Naomi's middle-aged cousin, Belinda Boaz, New Bethlehem's much admired (and super-closeted) physician, in a new light, one that myopic-when-she-wants-to-be Naomi has never cast on Belinda. Inevitably, sparks and more fly between Ruth, who is supposed to return to her students, and Belinda with the sad eyes, as each contemplates the generational and geographic distances between them. A sensitive tale of differences overcome, Crowe's first novel deserves to find its readership. Whitney Scott

5.0 out of 5 stars Two women return to their Midwestern roots, June 3, 2002
This review is from: Bethlehem Road (Paperback)
Superbly written by journalist and freelance writer Nancy Crowe, Bethlehem Road a unique small-town America novel with a very special twist. Two women return to their Midwestern roots, Naomi Bittner, a mother who has been spurned by her daughter Marina, and Ruth Greene, a lesbian lover who has also been rejected by Marina; neither fully understands why they have been pushed away, yet both become absorbed in reconnecting with the past and stumbling upon others who closet their lifestyle in secrecy. Bethlehem Road is a truly thoughtful, demonstrably well-written novel and highly recommended addition to the growing library of contemporary lesbian fiction.
