4.0 out of 5 stars Betrayal of the Mountain Man
As you would expect from Johnstone, a great western. Great characters, interesting story line, but not as good as the novels when he wrote alone.

3.0 out of 5 stars Betrayal of the mountain man
I am disappointed in this latest in the mountain man series. In all previous books Smoke and Sally had loads of money. Smoke had gold on the Sugarloaf and sally came from a rich banking family from the east , Sally was rich on her own. Yet this last book shows that they were about to loose the ranch over a debt of $ 2000. I should think the author would remember these...

3.0 out of 5 stars Weak attempt at Johnstone's style, March 4, 2008
I agree with another reviewer about Smoke's money situation. They had lots of money in the other books. And Sally never made bear claws. It was bear sign. Bear claws can be had today at any donut shop. Bear sign was an original name for the tasty treats.

Then book ended abruptly. No going to the bank to pay off the debt. No plans for the future. Just knock out the last robber...by Sally...and it ends. I'll buy one more to read and see if things improve.
