Book Description

March 1, 2009
Rebecca Blackburn caught a glimpse of the famed Jupiter Stones as a small child. Unaware of their significance, she forgot about them—until she discovered the priceless, long-missing gems were the key to a deadly chain of events spanning thirty years and three continents…sparing no one.

When a seemingly innocent photograph reignites one man's simmering desire for vengeance, Rebecca turns to Jared Sloan, the love she lost to tragedy and scandal. His own life has changed forever because of the secrets buried deep by their two families.

Their relentless quest for the truth will dredge up bitter memories and shocking revelations of misplaced loyalty, dangerous pride and naked ambition…and they will stop at nothing to expose a cold-blooded killer.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Harrell ( Minstrel's Fire ) adeptly locates well-drawn characters against glamorous backdrops to create a believable, gripping story that will keep armchair sleuths guessing about her Boston Brahmins' motivations until the final chapter. In 1959, 30 years before the main action of the novel, 10 priceless gems were stolen, setting in play a string of events--cold-blooded murders, betrayals and acts of vengeance--that propels the protagonists from the Cote d'Azur to Boston, Indochina and back. Rebecca Blackburn's bravery accidentally gives her clues that could ultimately reveal the impetus behind the series of deaths and the reason she lost Jared Sloan to another woman. But Rebecca needs the help of her wealthy uncle, and Jared, to uncover confidences they have long concealed to protect the innocent. Each scene brings fresh insights while raising more questions. Harrell forces her characters to confront issues of humanity, integrity and the multifaceted aspects of love without slowing the ever-quickening pace or loosing the many plot threads. Here is intelligent writing that remains highly entertaining.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not like her more recent books, May 17, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Betrayals (Kindle Edition)
I really enjoy Carla Neggers's books and was really up for a new one. Right from the start, this doesn't contain her recent cast of characters or related law enforcement characters. I purchased this on the Kindle so it wasn't until I finished the book and read the end papers that I got it - "First published by Berkley Books 1990 under the pseudonym Anne Harrell". Mystery solved! If you take it as "current day" is about 1990, you may stop wondering why the characters don't have cell phones.

I'm not a reviewer that is going to rehash the book jacket.

It was a good book - just not what I was expecting and a little too "coincidental" for my taste.

4.0 out of 5 stars More of an eoic type novel than I would expect from Carla Neggers, May 21, 2009
This review is from: Betrayals (Mass Market Paperback)
I didn't realize while reading this that it's a reprint of a 1990 novel written under a psuedonym. Therefore, I was surprised by the larger and more complicated plot than I have asociated with the author. The novel follows two families ever a period of 30 years and involving three continents. Ten prikceless gems are the key to a series of events creating enmity between the two families and spurring tragic events. However, much more than simple greed motivates the various characters. This is a page turner, but coincidence plays to heavy a part and the eventual ending is too neat an unravelling of the multiple knots in the story's thread. This is however a satisfying Summer read and reveals Neggers' skill at handling a multi-layered story.
